Working in the Garden and Yard

I had promised last week to post a picture of the finished bench. We moved it from the front yard due to thefts to the back and placed it under the cherry trees. I have sat here a couple of times while resting from working in the garden. Nice and shaded. Hopefully I will be able to make a couple of nice cushions to make it a bit more comfortable for reading in the afternoon shade.

This is a picture of some of the cherries on one of our trees. I am having a great deal of fun keeping the robins out of the tree. While I don't mind sharing, Robins have a habit of just pecking every single cherry.

Tomatoes ripening on the vine. They are a bit later than normal this year due to the colder temperatures we have been having. I am sure they will taste great though.

Some of the beets that I managed to freeze for this winter, earlier in the week. I used the beet leaves for supper that night. Harvery loves beet greens! Me, well I can take them or leave them.

It seems as if every second day I am either picking beans or peas. I have managed to get a few packages frozen for winter use. Hopefully there will be a great many more. It really helps keep the grocery bill down in the winter. It always surprises me how much frozen vegetables cost.
Harvey has been busy getting my rain barrel set up. I think he went way to large, but as he says he works in the oil patch and nothing is small there. Here is a picture of the barrel so far. We still need a tap and a overflow hose of some kind.

This thing is 300 gallons! Should hold enough rain water to last a long time.

Well off to visit all of you. Everyone have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  2. Jackie, Your bench came out so pretty!!! I'm sure it's a good feeling sitting there and looking at all your hard work in your garden. Your fruit trees are just amazing.Oh~ how I wish I had more room for more fruit trees and veggies. Wayne is going to finish putting up my clothes line today. It's kinda tall I will need a step stool, we weren't thinking all that good when we put the post in the buckets rather than down in the ground.Have a wonderful day at work.
    Hugs,

  3. Jackie,

Preserving food for winter use is not an easy task. It takes hours of work and that's after the harvesting...but it's well worth it.

I also have tomatoes ripening on the vine. They are slow this year because of lack of sunshine. Once again it's overcast and there's a storm brewing. There goes our fishing trip. *sigh*

Love the bench and the rain barrel will provide you with a lot of water. If you were here, it would be full in no time.

Hope you have a great week. Remember to take some time for yourself.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  6. I love your bench in the shade. and that cherry tree, oh my. I remember my great aunt having one, and she would hang aluminum pie pans from it to scare off the birds. I don't know if it worked or not, but she made some awesome cherry pies!
We priced some rain barrels at Lowe's last week, and were shocked that they were $100! For plastic! I like yours better than the ones we've seen here.
    Have a great evening!
