End Of The Month Update

So here is the update for this month. Even with fewer goals I was unable to get them all completed.

1.     Scan Pictures.  I did this all month and while not completely finished (wedding albums and the pictures in frames and on walls still left) I can definitely see an end in sight.

2.     Sew the green table cloth for the school. Done.

3.     Cross stitch the dragon picture.  Not done as of yet.

4.     Make Silent Auction Items.  Done.

5.     Go back and complete some old goals. Not done.

Still I think progress has been made.

My goals for the upcoming month are:

1.     Copy and declutter 2 binders of recipes.

2.     Go back and complete some goals from previous months.

3.     Change my wardrobe over from Fall/Winter to Spring/Summer.

4.     Plant flowers and the veggie garden.

5.    Spray some pots with the Glow In The Dark Paint.

6.     Finish the scanning of pictures.

Some of these goals will only take a short time, others longer.

My total for Project Declutter so far this year is 502. I still have a few more areas to declutter so hopefully this total will keep rising. Still don't know if I will reach the 1000 items mark, but I did manage to reach my goal of 500. Love it!!!

Little bits of green are showing up in my flower beds.

Tulips getting ready to bloom.

Daylilies and Asiatic Lilies poking up in the perennial bed.

Another small flower bed started. More lilies and glads planted here.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Ahhh, Weather!!!

Today was simply beautiful out. The sun shone, the temperatures rose, and Harvey and I spent much of the day outside tidying the yard and moving flowers around (planted some new bulbs as well).

Things are definitely looking up, and even if we get rain tomorrow, well it is needed.

Kurt phoned this afternoon and he sounds much better. He did mention that he has been living in his pajamas though. I was informed he was going to try and dress himself Friday and if unable to do so it looks like I will be heading up there to give him a hand with buttons. There is absolutely no way he will take another week off work.

Kurt did inform us of his improved pain situation by saying that if he was given the option of amputation over the surgery he would take the surgery. A few days ago his answer was much different.

Slowly but surely working on my goals for the month. I will post an update tomorrow, as well as an update on the declutter challenge and my new goals for May. Hopefully some pictures of the newly improved garden area as well.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesdays

I have spent most of the day trying to get as much done as is possible. If Kurt phones on Friday and says he needs my help I want to be able to just get up and go on Saturday morning.

However, I have run into one problem. Most of the gas stations on the way are Self Serve..... I have never pumped my own gas. In fact I have a problem getting the gas cap off. I think Harvey is going to have to give me a few lessons on how to do so.

I took down some of the vinyl mac tac from the shelves in the kitchen and used up the last of the press on vinyl tiles. I will need to buy about 9 more tiles, but boy does it make a difference!! Things look so much cleaner.

I also worked on the Silent Auction items. Sewed them up tonight and as I still have a few days grabbed some more yarn to make one more item.

Walking was perhaps one of the thriftiest things I did today. I am up to 20 blocks and aiming to go higher yet. I don't know how many steps that is.... I get out of step and miscount every time.

Harvey has been busy in the yard. He is getting very good at using items he already has. The flower gardens are going to be marvelous and I should have lots of cut flowers this year to brighten the house.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Good morning everyone. Here it is the beginning of another week, and from the looks of the roads outside we have entered spring. Great big water puddles, which of course does not mean a great deal of rain, but are welcome all the same.

Monday

I fell asleep in my chair on Saturday and so Harvey decided to give me a rest and went out and bought us something to eat. So today will be the meal I had planned for that night. Soup and sandwiches.

Tuesday

Leftover Beef Roast. I am thinking I have the makings for a fairly decent stir fry in the fridge or perhaps another tasty casserole.

Wednesday

Time to use up a package of the frozen cabbage rolls. Carrots sound like a nice side and they need to be used up as well.

Thursday

Stew and dumplings.

Friday (the beginning of a new month)

Fish and chips along with a salad. There are still a couple of packages of Harvs catch in the freezer and they need using before we start on the cod.

Saturday

Think this will be a clean out the fridge night. Should have lots of leftovers to choose from.

Sunday

Time for some special chicken we bought awhile back. Hopefully nice enough to BBQ it. Planning on serving it with salad and tin foil potatoes.

As is usual in this household lunches will be sandwiches and whatever leftovers are not ear marked for another dinner.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations and I have done nothing but think about the vocations people hold in the world.

The ones I am most thankful for today are those that hold the vocations of healing. Kurt is home from his surgery now and from what he tells us it was a success. The nurses, doctors and surgeons from beginning to end were wonderful, even though Kurt is in a great deal of pain he is happy with what they accomplished and how quickly the whole thing was handled.

Vocations are more than just the priesthood, or becoming a sister or brother. Each of us is called to our own vocation being it married life, single life, motherhood, fatherhood or adoption. We are all called and need to answer whatever call God extends to us.

I have thought so for a long time, but having a priest say we are all called to discipleship just makes it all that much clearer. We all need to walk the walk if we talk the talk. Something that is not always done by members of a church congregation. It does not matter what faith one belongs to, this is something that occurs in all of them.

I have made a step towards this, this past week. I am no longer a member of our parish council, my term ended in March. A mistake was made by our parish council chairperson in that she emailed me the minutes of the last meeting (held just this past week). I deleted the message and emailed her back saying that what occurred at a meeting was no longer my business. I do not want to know what is discussed as there is so much negative gossip in the parish and the less I know the better. From now on I plan on walk the walk and talk the talk, this is my vocation and a sign of true discipleship (at least for now).

Please practice your vocation to the best of your ability. We need you all more than ever.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Playing the Waiting Game

Kurt had a call a couple of days ago, as many of you already know, to be in Calgary by 7 am this morning for surgery on his ruptured bicep.

He phoned at around 3:30 today and still had not made it into the operating room!!! We haven't heard anything since, so both Harvey and I are hoping the surgery is done.

The phone just rang. Back in a moment or two.

Just got off the phone and the surgery is over. They are keeping him overnight so he sent his friend home and the friend will come back and get Kurt tomorrow. Nice to finally hear his voice even though it was hoarse and he was a bit out of it. He is also realizing that perhaps he should in fact take some time off of work. Seems he can't really move his arm well so getting dressed could present a problem.

Since the day has been spent waiting for phone calls I decided to play with our newest purchase.

Yep, we bought a Food Saver. Right now I am not too sure if this was a good buy or not, it is going to take some playing around with before I manage to get it working to my satisfaction.

I did package up the chicken breasts though.

Four packages residing in the freezer.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Friday Frugalities

It has been a fairly frugal week.

I thought that perhaps this week I would try just listing the frugal things I managed to do this week.

1.   Used Neilson Home Scan to gain a few more points for items bought. Also took part in one of their surveys this week.

2.   Used leftovers as much a possible to fashion new and interesting meals. Then any leftovers were stored and eaten for another meal.

3.   Did the usual frugal laundry method again this week.

4.   Went for a walk every day. This is good exercise and since it is free was a very frugal way of getting exercise each day.

5.   Using up craft supplies from my rather very large stock of said supplies.

6.   Phoning long distance when my phone package makes it free to do so. When not free I text messaged according to my mobility plan.

7.   Used up one of the samples of dental floss from the dentist.

8.   Packed my lunch when I worked one day this week.

I am sure there are many more, but this is what I can remember.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

We had a few nice days this week and Harvey completed the extended fire pit/BBQ area.

The patio blocks were laid and the BBQ returned to its place. I am told that this will be much better for standing on. Kind of like the Princess and the Pea, Harvey did not enjoy standing on the gravel.

The cement base of the fire pit was lifted and moved about three feet further away from the house. That was a half days work. Harvey had made the cement pad himself and I swear it was 4" thick and weighed a goodly bit. We ended up prying it up and then rolling it over. The blocks were replaced and we now have a lovely area around it for sitting.

However the chair we had needs some work and Harvey wants to add some lighting as it is pretty dark back here at night.

The weather has changed to dull and rainy so the rest of the work will be put off for a few days. This is normal for living on the prairies. Spring is seemingly here and then the next day takes flight.

Me? Well I have been busy with the usual tasks and a visit to the dentist. That visit took place today and while the freezing is no more, where the needles were inserted is still very tender. Hope I am back to normal tomorrow.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Everybody have a wonderful day

Thrifty Tuesday

I was subbing in one of our schools today and talk around the lunch table seemed to center on how everyone was saving money in what is turning out to be a difficult economic turn in our city. Really nothing new to me, but everyone was so excited about the ideas traveling around the table.

I glanced at everyone's lunches and smiled to myself. It was amazing to me that not one person had a lunch that wasn't homemade. Most in fact had brought leftovers from other meals. Finally, I looked up from my own packed lunch and said, "The best way to save money is to pack a lunch everyday, to bring your own coffee instead of stopping to buy, and to use all your leftover food to it's best advantage." One of the teachers (who always used to buy a lunch) asked me what made me say such a thing. I told her to roughly add up what she would have spent in a week buying lunches and stopping for coffee. When she did the shock on her face was something to see. Then I told her to roughly figure out what it cost to pack her lunch today (mostly leftovers). Right away she saw a big difference.

I went on to say that repairing clothing right away was another great way to save. By doing so a person negates the need to run out and replace something that is ripped or torn. Thus saving the cash to buy something more necessary perhaps.

Thrifty is once again becoming cool. People are becoming more aware of how hard it is to make that dollar and are wanting to make that dollar last as long as possible. I am beginning to think that perhaps I am not quite as alone as I thought.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Monday

Sausage Casserole, salad.

Tuesday

Leftover Chicken made into a casserole, salad. (Cold this week so we all need some comfort food and something very quick to make).

Wednesday

BBQ Pulled Pork from the freezer served on homemade buns. More than likely we will be having salad with this as well.

Thursday

Clean out the fridge night with sliced raw veggies as the side.

Friday

German noodles, potatoes, onions and eggs.

Saturday

Soup and Sandwiches.

Sunday

Beef roast, roast potatoes, roasted carrots, and salad.

Small amounts of leftovers will be eaten for lunches, if there is nothing of note in the fridge we will be eating sandwiches.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Third Sunday of Easter

Today has been relatively quiet. I attended Mass today by myself as Harvey was not feeling very well first thing this morning. He started feeling better in the afternoon and managed between rain showers to get the BBQ area of the extended patio finished. Looks pretty darn good too. Hoping that we can move things around over the next few days and get it totally completed.

Father Brian talked about peace today. True peace, not the peace of people, but the peace of Christ which is totally different. True peace can not be brought about by wars, or diplomacy, rather it is a conversion. We need to forgive and be forgiven in order to find that peace. Yes, Father Brian stressed that even our enemies must be forgiven because they could very well be our room mates in our next life. That has stuck with me throughout the day, makes me wonder if I have truly forgiven my enemies.

The rest of the day has been spent doing a bit of straightening in the sewing/craft room, scanning pictures, reading and working on the cowl I am making for the family reunion.

Harvey has spent the time working on his wine, the patio and watching hockey.

Just another quiet Sunday on the old homestead.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Yard Work

I thought sharing some pictures of the yard work Harvey is doing was in order.

First the extended fire pit area.

The BBQ area. Leveled and ready for the concrete patio blocks.

The patio blocks which will be placed on the leveled area.

Harvey said this would be completed today, but as you can see we did not get that far. Perhaps tomorrow if it does not rain.

What did I occupy myself with while he was busy with this project? I made baked beans....

Lots of yummy goodness to eat during the summer months.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Friday Frugalities

I have had a nice frugal week. The sun has shone every day and the temperatures have been wonderful, almost summer-like which is strange at this time of year.

Harvey has been busy working in the yard. He has been using items he already has on hand so no expenditures. I hope to show you a picture of his finished renovation of our fire pit/BBQ area tomorrow. He extended it a little bit and while the fire pit won't be moved as of tomorrow (we have some items to burn first) things will be coming together.

I have only been shopping (spending money) once this week. I did make a trip today to price out washers and checked out a couple of ladies clothing stores. I did not however part with any cash. I love keeping our hard earned retirement funds in our pockets.

Laundry was dried on my clothes lines for the most part. I did have to dry a load in our drier, but that one load was much better than 4 or 5 loads.

The rest of the week has been spent using up every leftover in the fridge. We have actually had two meals of leftovers this week. Got to love cooking once and eating twice. Changes the menu a bit, however saving time and money is important.

I have also decided to start saving toilet paper rolls next winter. So many bloggers have talked about using them for starting their seeds in the spring, and how wonderful they are that I am going to give it a try. Heck since they are smaller than the pots I use, I could probably plant even more starters.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

As many of you know I have spent the last while scanning pictures onto the computer and burning them onto DVD's. Time consuming, but absolutely necessary. Once done, keeping up will be so much easier.

I do have a problem though, I spend lots of time remembering places and happenings of many years ago. Some are extremely happy memories and some are so very sad. But that is life.

I am going to share a few of the photo's with you today.

This is a picture of me on a Shetland pony in front of our house in Scarborough, Ontario. I was 5 years old here, and yes I am wearing a dress. My father did not allow me to wear trousers until I reached high school and even then it was only on weekends.

Here I am around two and half with what could be considered my first pet. Ricky was a very friendly budgie. He would eat out of my hand, and even eat his seeds off my tongue (or so I have been told).

This was my Grade 8 Graduation. I had such a crush on Mr. Story my teacher.

Memories make life so wonderful. Even the sad ones.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Recipe Wednesday

Today I made something I have made before, but as I was not able to use broccoli I used cut up asparagus. I think I like it better this way.

Souper Supper

1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 soup can of water
1 soup can of rice
1 1/2 cups cooked broccoli, chopped (I used the asparagus left in the crisper, cut up into 1 inch or so pieces)
4 slices of cheese, cut up (I used what was left of a bag of grated cheese and a couple of cheese slices)
1 1/2 cups leftover ham cut up

Put the soup, water, and rice in casserole. Mix together. Add the broccoli, cheese and ham. Stir well. Cover and bake at 350 for 30 mins.

It was a lovely day again today so Harvey decided it was time to work in one area of the yard that was a bit over grown.

This area is now short one very large cedar and one spreading juniper.

Instead they are laying here
At the edge of the garden area.

Remember I told you all about Harvey fixing my wrought iron and wood bench.

Look how wonderful it looks sitting on the deck. Now we just have to find the right place for it!!

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Figuring Out How We Are Doing

According to the Collins Gage Canadian Dictionary thrift is the economical management of cash; the habit of saving.

Harvey has been retired for 3 years now, and I figured it was time I took stock of how we are doing financially and whether we are practicing thriftiness.

Other then a few scares with bills seemingly getting out of hand this winter (we have taken steps to combat this and will be doing a few more things to keep our power bills lower), we seem to be doing quite well. Even with the cost of living creeping up our investments seem to be holding their own and even making a good amount of interest at times.

I am slowly but surely learning better stocking techniques and my trying to use absolutely everything up is finally saving us money. I am no longer throwing as much food away and so I am also saving on garbage bags (amazingly 1 box of 100 lasted almost an entire year). This also saves on groceries as every meal is planned and leftover use it ups are incorporated into the plan.

I do think we might have waited a bit too long thinking and talking about moving, instead of just doing so. Real estate prices are dropping here and there is a glut of houses for sale. The bottoming out of the oil boom has caused many to either move back to where they came from, or they are trying to get out of mortgages the loss of jobs is making impossible to maintain. So here we will sit for awhile yet, working on getting our home renovated and perhaps ready to sell somewhere down the road. It is wonderful that Harvey can do much of the work himself. This saves us cash and time. We also get to use slightly more expensive materials and the cost is still kept down in comparison to hiring someone to do the work.

Things are paid for by cash, we have everything we want and need.

Amazingly, neither Harvey or I have felt in the least deprived during the past three years of learning to work with less money. We are stretching and growing in ways that sometimes shock us. No longer do either of us shop for fun, we have found new hobbies (well at least Harvey has I have always had perhaps too many hobbies) that not only keep us occupied, but enable us to have a treat (some very good wines and ports are being produced in our basement). I have found new places to get craft items and enjoy the hunt for a good buy.

All in all I think we are doing very well as we move into the 4th year of Harvey's retirement.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

The weeks seem to be going by very quickly. Time flies by when you least expect it to. I really thought that once Harvey retired and I semi retired the days would drag by. Not so!!!

I did a bit of a switch on menus last week as the weather was lovely and I wanted to get Harvey grilling once again. They weren't big switches, but they did enable us to enjoy cooking outside.

Monday

Leftover grilled hamburgers from Saturday along with salad and fries.

Tuesday

Home made fish cakes. I plan on using up the leftover grilled fish along with the leftover mashed potatoes for this. Served with asparagus this will be just lovely.

Wednesday

I will be pulling a package of leftover ham out of the freezer and since it is supposed to be a cool and rainy day making a casserole. Something new and different I hope. Served with a salad.

Thursday

Mushroom meat balls, rice and carrots should make a lovely meal.

Friday

Perogies, onions and sour cream.... Perhaps not good for the diet, but just a treat every so often is fine.

Saturday

Hopefully nice enough to grill some ribs along with potatoes. I will make a salad here as well.

Sunday

Pulling out the chicken we did not have yesterday. Roast potatoes, roast carrots and once again a salad.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Today the Church celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday.

Father Brian told us that this is not about empty devotions, rather it is about the mercy Christ imparted with His Divinity. That we should be more open to acts of mercy, love and compassion to those less fortunate than we are.

Father went on to mention that Pope Francis has announced a year of mercy to begin in the fall of this year.

We must show mercy, and do charitable acts with no thought as to what we can gain from them, not for our glory but rather for the glory of God and his Son. Considering some of the political jockeying going on in our Parish right now this could be an eye opener for some people. I will continue to do what I am able to do and hopefully things will settle down very soon.

Today I was very grateful for the sunny, breezy day. I have actually managed to use my outside clothes line twice now. It was wonderful seeing the sheets fluttering in the wind.

Nothing reminds me so much of the beginning of spring than the smell of line dried items.

I also recycled three more used candle jars.

I still have to use some Goo-B-Gone to get rid of the sticky residue from the labels, but then these will be ready to use in my sewing room to store thread and perhaps some buttons.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Update Saturday

I finally have some updates on projects to share with you all.

Right now I am concentrating on getting a few small items made for the Silent Auction at our Family Reunion this summer. This leaves other projects on the back burner, but I have nothing but time for those once these are done.

I started this pocket scarf this afternoon. I am hoping to finish it in a few days.

This small tuck in around the neck ruffle scarf was finished early this afternoon.

Three sets of two of these variegated brown dish cloths.

Two sets of two of these black and white dish cloths.

I plan on making a couple more small items, pet beds and perhaps another pocket scarf. Then I am finished and can move on to those other projects I would like done.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Friday Frugalities

I really don't know why I call this post Friday Frugalities, especially when I try to remember all the frugal things I have done over the past week. Hmmm, perhaps the title should be Frugal Friday Roundup.

This week has actually been pretty decent as far as spending. Even though Kurt and Kris were home I stuck to my menus, used items I had on hand, and only bought dairy and produce to make salads. Fact of the matter is both boys helped clean out leftovers in the fridge and even bought us a treat or two while they were home (free treats are on par with winning cash around here).

I have been walking every day this week, even when the weather has been not too nice. Frugal and free, probably just as healthy for a person as joining an expensive gym (around here gym memberships are very high, same for the cost of a personal trainer). Today I added stair climbing to my routine of two walks a day.

Laundry was done in the usual frugal manner with half the detergent and I washed and rinsed in cold where possible. I even managed to get three of the 5 loads on my basement drying lines.

I have started the Silent Auction gifts and am using yarn that I have on hand. Much of the yarn I have been using are bits and bobs from other projects. I am hoping to have 10 or 11 small items made by the end of the month.

I have worn my clothing (other then shirts and under garments) for at least two days.  This should save on wash loads.

Best of all, I have walked down memory lane scanning pictures of family and friends.

Kris was not in the least happy here. It was hot, and he had not had his nap. This is also one of the last family pictures we had with our angel, Krista.

This is the last picture we have had with the boys. Definitely time for a new one. I can still remember the photographer saying to the sons in order to make them smile "Think my mom is making me do this...." and the chorus from the boys "She really is..."

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

Ahh, the end of the week is drawing near. Not that I need worry, being retired does have its advantages.

Went for my walk early this morning. Remember the snow covered road?

Same road, just a few wet spots and a skiff of snow by the curb.

It seems like every block I walked had a number of houses with one of these signs in front.

Lots of For Sale signs, sometimes three in one block!! I think the crumbling of the oil boom has something to do with the numbers of homes being put up for sale. People moving back from whence they came or perhaps unable to afford the monthly payments.

Very few have "Sold" on top or across. It's a buyer's market right now.

One thing pleased me greatly.

The tulips are poking through in the garden. Looks as if we might actually get what passes for spring this year after all.

Almost forgot, another thing pleased me greatly and that was the power bill this month. All the little things we did to improve our bill are paying off. The total we owed with this months reading was........ $50.93. Much better than the last two bills. Makes my frugal heart glad!

One thing did not please me. Kurt has a complete tear of the tendon that holds the muscle to the elbow. This means surgery for him in the near future (once he sees the specialist we will know when). Hopefully he gets in very soon after his appointment.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Calm Reigns Once Again

I finally have my computer back in the evening, and the house is quiet again. Almost too quiet, truth be told, but I am grateful for the hubbub of the boys (guess I should call them men now) being home for a few days.

Yesterday I woke up to this.

Snow! Heavy, wet and easily packed down into ice on our streets and highways.

Kurt had to head home (he has his ultra sound tomorrow in a hospital in Calgary) and to get as far as Weyburn (the next city over) it took him an hour and a half. It usually is a 45 minute drive so double the usual time. He made it home late last night, though he did say that the farther away he got the better the roads became.

I want to share my Mother's Day gift from him. I always get it early and he likes me to open it up immediately rather then save it for May.

An angel for my collection and a set of beads to pray the Credence.

I also made a trip to the CWL Rummage Sale. I found a few good buys.

There is enough orange to make a light summer top and enough white to do the same. I was hoping for more white (enough to make the next prayer table covering) but I am happy that there is enough to make another summer top. Something I am sadly lacking in my wardrobe for that season.

I found two novels to add to my reading pile.

These two hard cover books to add to my reference library in the sewing/craft room. The great thing about both of these books is that they have full sized pattern pieces inside them.

My haul from the sale came to $4.00!!! Thrifty to say the least considering the fabric only cost me a dollar, the pocket books fifty cents each and the hard cover a dollar each. I was quite happy.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Ahh, April and spring. Not!! We keep getting snow and below freezing temperatures which is not the nicest start to spring we have ever had.

On to my weekly menus, and because oldest DS is still here things are changed around a tiny bit already. I had forgotten how much he can eat!!!

Monday

Shake and Bake chicken wings, homemade fries and leftover veggies from other meals.

Tuesday

Leftover beef roast. I think I will make this into something to serve over homemade biscuits. Carrots as a veggie side.

Wednesday

Pork chops, mashed potatoes and green beans.

Thursday

The leftover beef supper from Tuesday along with any leftover chicken wings. Probably a salad as a side.

Friday

Baked fish, rice, and mixed veggies.

Saturday

Mushroom meatballs, rice and a salad.

Sunday

Roast chicken, roasted carrots and celery, roasted potatoes. I think I may even stuff the chicken.

So there you have it. Meals for the week.

Everyone have a wonderful day.

God bless.
