Menu Monday

After going to the store shopping today, I am realizing that there are people in this city that can't afford to eat. Or if they can it is without eating meat. I am going to go back to purchasing a bag of groceries for the food bank once again. It broke my heart to see an older lady putting various meats back after looking at the prices. The chicken was relatively inexpensive but she put that back as well and when she turned away from the meat department I was sure she was almost crying.

I am really going to try and use up all that I can and even I had to put a few items in the meat department back and make a different selection.

Things are going to be stretched as much as possible as with prices rising and not going down, it could be us that eventually can not afford to purchase meat.

Monday

Warming up two ham pasties and serving them with salad.

Tuesday

Slow cooker stew. There should be enough to freeze as well.

Wednesday

Chicken veggie soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Thursday

Quiche to use up a bit of ham. Not using Swiss Cheese, but cheddar.

Friday

Salmon patties, rice, salad.

Saturday

Leftover quiche and salad.

Sunday

Chili and toast. I will make a big pot so as to have leftovers to warm up later in the week.

Sometime this week I will make the Cabbage Bread (hopefully tomorrow) and get those into the freezer. I am also tempted to try my hand at making some homemade pizza pops to use up a few items in the fridge.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. I do what I can as well in regards to giving to the food banks here. It’s sad that others cannot afford to eat. Your meals sound good. I have a small package of ham that would be good in a quiche this week too.

  2. I have never heard of cabbage bread? Sounds like a good variety of meals in your house.

  3. I'm intrigued by the cabbage bread! Is there a link you could share to a recipe similar to what you make?

The woman putting back groceries makes me sad & reminds me that I need to do more to help with donations again. I was in a good routine of volunteering when I wasn't working. It's harder to work around my schedule, but I need to find something that works. - Hawaii Planner

  4. These days my food bank contribution is usually tinned meat or fish. I know it's not as nice as fresh but I just hope someone who can't afford meat will enjoy it.

  6. It is a sad situation, isn't it? We never know what others are going through. Hopefully it is just a matter of the week remaining until pensions are deposited.

  7. I am at the bottom of my freezer with 4 ham hocks and 3 soup bones. All 7 of these have plenty of meat on them for a good meal. Still saving for the beef that should be here in a little over a week. I can't buy meat in the store right now. I am also donating to my local food pantry. I have neighbors that farmed for many years and live on less than 10000 in Social Security. I give as much as they will accept, but the food panty makes it easier on them for many reasons.

  8. I agree that it is sad. I also need to make more effort with the food bank.

  9. So many more people are suffering from food insecurity now and it's even more important to help the food banks in any way we can. I'm looking forward to the 'reverse advent' that our local food bank does late in November and will definitely be doing that. Many people tend to just give something like Kraft Dinner, not realizing that many people have no access to a stove in order to cook it.
