Thrifty and Frugal Thursday

 Thrifty and Frugal

Another quiet week here on the Phillips homestead. I have been working on a few ways to become more thrifty and frugal. Success in most of the areas so far. Now I just need to make them a habit.

1.  Started a facial cleansing routine using some items I have collected as gifts in the past year. No money spent on this until I can see if it can be sustained. Or will I go back to using soap and water. I will say that my face feels a great deal softer.

2.  Have managed to make a couple of items that we usually purchase (fries and hashbrowns). Next up will be hotdog and hamburger buns.

3.  Continuing to save the water when it is heating up to do the dishes to water plants or put into my Brita, or into the kettle.

4.  Upped the amount of time I am walking in the house for a bit of free exercise.

5.  Using up the leftovers in the house for other meals or brand new ones.

6.  Copying/printing meatless recipes to try.

7.  Downloaded some free reading material onto my ereader.

8.  Made an inventory of the meat in the upright freezer and will be planning meals (already managed to do so) to use up the older meat first.

9.  Trying to have as many no spend days as possible.

Of course the usual lights off in rooms not in use, using my bathroom cloths (saves on toilet paper), using up hand lotions that I got as gifts, decluttering, repairing, and just plain staying as healthy as we possibly can.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. My husband mentioned he wanted to start making bread again. I'm all for it. He has always enjoyed baking. I'll be making a vegetable soup with our leftover new years rump roast that's in the freezer. I have enough for 2 meals and the soup will last for a dinner and lunch for a couple of days. I don't know what to make for the 2nd meal. We already had hot roast beef sandwiches.

  2. Staying healthy is huge - that can truly eat away a budget in so many ways.

  3. Sounds like a good and thrifty week, Jackie. I love that you keep track of your no spend days. I believe I could go all year without buying soap, toothpaste, and shampoo. I’m going to try it and see how long it lasts can make it. Belinda

  4. Hi Jackie, have you tried lentil tacos for a meatless meal? My sister in law just asked for my recipe. It reminded me when my 11 year old grandson was happily eating lentil tacos, he likes them so much and asked if there would be lentil tacos in heaven.

  6. Keep up the great job. At our job in a warehouse, the rule was FIFO. First in first out. We follow that practice in everything, right down to the freezer.

  7. I've still got lots of toiletries to use up for my project pan, so I'll be continuing with that this year in an attempt to declutter these items from the house. I am so ingrained in my skincare routine that it drives OH mad. I have to take it all with me when we go away and he ends up having to carry a bag of my toiletries through passport control for me, as there are so many items. He takes virtually nothing, thankfully.

  9. My skin care routine is pretty basic and has been for many years. The only makeup I use is a little eyebrow pencil and I use Cetaphil cleanser and CeraVe cream twice a day. Both are pretty cheap and last a long time. I don't use perfume and instead use Palmer's Cocoa Butter lotion which smells nice and isn't very expensive.
We have enough books tucked under our bed to last us years - none of which we've paid full price for (if we paid anything at all). We use the libary and usually end up with enough books from there that we don't end up touching any of the under-the-bed collection. It's comforting to know they're there though.
