A Simple Life

Life is so much easier now that I am moving closer and closer to a simpler way of living.

I have always cooked most of my meals from scratch, not so much when we first married, but as my experience at the stove grew so did my scratch cooking. Now it is more just the way I do things. Today I will be making pancakes for our supper and as usual there will be no pancake mix used. I don't think I have ever tasted pancakes from a mix, I know my mom always made hers from scratch as well.

Moving away from mixes, not only gives me control over the ingredients, but works out to be less expensive than cookie mixes, muffin mixes, cake mixes, and pie crust mixes. Mind you the way flour and sugar are increasing in price that could perhaps change.

Decluttering is making room in my life for those things I love and passing on those that we no longer need to others who just might. Seeing empty spaces in my closet and drawers makes me happy. It also makes me wonder, why I ever gathered so many things to wear and why I have held onto things that no longer fit or suit the lifestyle I now live.

I am now able to organize things a bit more. There is loads more to do but I am slowly getting there. Using things up in my craft/sewing room has been an eyeopener. I never realized how much I had gathered over the years. Right now I figure I will be able to be occupied with this for a number of years. The stash will make some lovely gifts over the next few years for sure.

I am hopeful that we will keep moving in this direction which gives us more time to spend together as a family, to enjoy our hobbies more, in fact to perhaps add a hobby or two that will come in useful in the future.

It will give us time to go out and forage in the summer and fall, something we did in the past, but it has gone by the wayside as we filled our days with busyness and work.

Life is meant to be enjoyed not rushed through. As we age and the years pass with what seems to be speed, this becomes even more important.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  2. Well said Jackie! As we get older time seems to fly by and we need to slow down and appreciate what we have.

  3. I love that your life is easier now that you're moving closer to a simpler way of living. I love being able to slow down and enjoy what we have without the rush of trying to get more and more stuff. It is a good life for certain.

  4. I love cooking from scratch, keeping ingredients in takes less space than loads of packets. A slower life is very rewarding.

  5. I'm slowly working at decluttering and this will be my second year of using stash yarn. We really do need lesss than we think, in everything.

  6. Very good to hear that you are living simplier. I don't see you going toward that. I see you as that. If that makes sense.

Yum on the pancakes. So easy and fun to make and some nights, I whip up the wet batter for the fridge and the dry batter in a Mason jar and in the morning, mix the two.

    So fun.

    Happy Decluttering.

  7. YES on scratch cooking!! For years I have made all mixes ‘by hand’, and have them ready for use. For example, this morning I made my all purpose baking mix, using freshly ground whole wheat flour, dry milk powder, etc. I keep it refrigerated for making pancakes, waffles, muffins etc. I also make cake mix, cookie mix, muffin mix etc. Homemade mixes are great because, as well as being convenient, you control the sugar, salt, and fat content! This may be necessary for taste, health or budgetary reasons. Most of the mixes I got from a (out of print) book called Make a Mix. For current day recipes Merissa at Little House Living is also excellent.

  8. I like that at my age, I can make choices for my (our) health, lifestyle and do what works for us so we can enjoy our elder years. it's different than yours but still works!

  9. I agree with you about making space by decluttering, although I have a long way to go in this regard. I also agree about using my stash. I have so much fabric I don't think I could use it all in another lifetime. It may be time to donate some of it or give some away. I enjoy using what I can now, but I know I will struggle to use it all. Why did I ever buy so much?

  10. Dear Jackie, I love living a simple life without all the clutter and it feels good to donate or get rid of things I don't need or use. I am much happier.
