As the weather gets colder, and the snow keeps coming (not as bad as some corners of my province as of yet), I started to think about home remedies.
I can remember my mom using milk poultices to help pull out a sliver that she couldn't get out with a sterile pin and tweezers or giving us tea with honey and lemon for a sore throat. It got me thinking about a book my dad gave me once when he came to visit. I just had to go and look for it in the bookcase.
Wow, such wonderful recipes that have worked through the ages. Things from facial scrubs to sleep aids. All made from natural products like honey and herbs. Those are in the first part of the book. It goes on to cooking with honey. Bread, veggie, and main dish recipes galore.
It then moves into using garlic.... Most of the home remedies sound a bit farfetched to me, but some sound very interesting. Lots are for usage outside to control pests. Then the book moves on to recipes for breads, veggies, and main dishes.
The last section of the book is using various types of vinegar for cleaning purposes and making personal care products. Of course, part of the chapter is once again recipes like salad dressings, pickling recipes, various vinegar recipes and even a few soup and main dish recipes.
The last chapter in the book is about nutrition and what is known as super foods.
Lots for me to check into, lots that could be put to good use to try and take care of minor ailments. I can see me using some of the recipes over this winter. I am also going to do a search online to see what I can find to make lozenges and cough medicines.
Don't worry if things get too bad, I will definitely visit a physician. But there is no harm in trying something different.
Everybody have a wonderful evening.
God bless.
I much prefer home remedies anymore. Even OTC meds mess with my stomach. Of course if I really have to, I do but there’s still a lot of credence to the “old remedies” today.
ReplyDeleteWith the shortages of cough and cold remedies, it won't hurt to have some homemade remedies to get you through. If you find something that works, please do share.
ReplyDeleteWe're getting a bit more snow today, but not much accumulation thankfully! I hoping not to have to pull out the shovel for a little while yet.
There are some wonderful old remedies, aren't there, and also some that sound dire (and are, thankfully, no longer used).
ReplyDeleteHoping the cold isn't too bad - and to think is was as warm as summer here over the weekend. Strange. xx
You've reminded me about a recipe we have (came from our chef son) that's great for bad coughs - tastes terrible but it seems to work. It's one of those things you have to have courage to take though. Your book sounds fascinating.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful old book for you to revisit again. My daughter makes all sorts of home remedies, cleaning products, and even makes her own soap! She is much more clever than me.
ReplyDeleteWell, I know a lot of those old remedies worked. Willoe bark tea, reduced fever for centuries and that is where aspirin comes from.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really good book. It would be great if you could share some of the recipes with us as you use them.
