How Did I Do

1. Finish the quilt (a carry over from last month).  Not touched this month at all. I hope to get it done completely next month.

2.  Continue working on the rug. Perhaps even finish it.  Rug should be finished in a couple of weeks.

3.  Sew the three skirts I cut out last month.  Done

4.  Sew the four tops I cut out last month.  Done

5.  Try for 20 no spend days this month.  I actually made 21 no spend days this month, so not bad at all.

6.  Cut out 2 more tops.  Done.

7.  Cut out another skirt.  Done

I am finding it much easier to work on the rug while Kurt is home visiting, which is why the quilt has been laid aside.

Last month (or perhaps I should say this month) another 35 items were given to various second hand stores or in the case of a few items buttons and zippers removed and cut into rags to be used around the house.

I will post my new goals tomorrow.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

I have been a good girl, stayed out of shops, shopped at home first and have even been busy using up odds and ends. Don't have too many leftovers as Kurt is home and I had forgotten how much he can eat. This does mean that most things are being used up and no wasting is happening. Got to love that. Two of the meals since he has been home (out of three) have been made with meat that was frozen from previous Sunday meals. Tomorrows will consist of cleaning out some of the precooked meals from the freezer.

Shopping at home is making me rethink purchases. Do we need it, or do we just want it? I have started to ask myself that question with every purchase and so far I am getting pretty good at telling the two apart most of the time. The wants can wait until we have built up the bank account once again.

I went to the library late last week and got myself a stack of reading material. I also found a book of knitting patterns that only use one skein to make. Hmmm, a way to use up some of those leftover yarn skeins and balls from past projects.

I did a few repairs on clothing this past week. I was in the sewing room anyway and thought what the heck, fix that hem, fix a seam or two, and sew on a couple of missing buttons. The clothing looks brand new and is back in Harvey's closet.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

The end of one month and the beginning of another. Time does seem to be slipping right by.

Monday

Leftover pork roast made into a stir fry and served over pasta.

Tuesday

Leftover ham from Sunday. I think I will make a cold plate, serving it with macaroni salad, and tossed green salad. Some pickles would be nice as well.

Wednesday

Cabbage bread from the freezer (should be able to clear out a few packages as Kurt is home).

Thursday

Homemade chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Friday

I am leaning towards a perogy meal.

Saturday

Out for supper as this could be Kurt's last day home and I am hoping that Kris comes home as well.

Sunday

Roast Chicken, roast potatoes, roast carrots and perhaps a salad of some type.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

This will be a quick post as Kurt is now home and I need to get him some supper.

It has been a quiet day, Mass was wonderful today and ever since I have been pondering "Love thy neighbour as you love yourself" as well as St. Paul's remark to "watch you don't devour one another" in his letter to the Galatians.

We all fight and argue and a parish community is no different. However if we fight so much that we lose sight of the commandment to love one another are we really followers of Christ? Makes one take stock of what is important.

I'm off to visit with Kurt for a bit before I go to bed.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

I have promised you all a picture of some finished projects for awhile now. Here are the 4 tops that I managed to finish over the last week or so.

All very simple patterns, and they turned out not too badly adding a bit of colour to my wardrobe.

I even managed to cut out another skirt and a top today before I headed to the birthday tea. I hope to get another top or perhaps even three cut out tomorrow.

Other then that I have no other finished projects to show you. I do hope to have the quilt done on Tuesday (well at least sandwiched and ready to quilt) and will post a picture of the finished product as soon as it is ready.

It has been raining so much over the last few days that staying in and working on projects is not a problem at all.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

The stock market here is taking a beating after the announcement of the UK voting to leave the EU. Hopefully it will not last long and things will come up once again. Until that time, however we are going to do a bit of belt tightening.

My frugal wins for this week are.

1.  Used some coupons when I was shopping. I don't think I will ever become an extreme couponer, but every little bit does help.

2.  Washing was done in the usual frugal manner.

3.  Made my own cloths for putting on the mop to wash the walls. Used leftover fabric from my stash. They will need to be tweaked a bit, but did work.

4.  Used up leftovers to make 4 meals this week. Twice I pulled out leftover packages of meat from the fridge freezer (I always package up the remains of roast meats) and made two suppers. The leftovers from each of those meals made us supper for another two nights.

5.  We managed without air conditioning for two days.

6.  No watering of garden as we got another 9/10ths of an inch of rain earlier this week. It also washed the dust off the car. If the weather forecast is correct we will be getting more rain tonight.

7.  Printed off two Birthday cards for a Come and Go Tea tomorrow.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

The sun shone all day today, however it really didn't get too warm.

I ended up not going to the school to help the children with their sewing. The teacher got a bit confused on the day (I guess yesterday was the day she really wanted me....it's the end of the year so it is understandable). I may get there on the last day of school, we will see.

Not going did enable me to get more work and more of my errands done though, which is a very good thing.

Grocery shopping for a week of fresh fruits and vegetables, paying those nasty bills, and getting pet supplies were all accomplished very early. I then did a small amount of sewing. Still not finished the last top however. Tomorrow should see it done, except for the embroidery or fancy work on the yoke.

I have a feeling that next month is going to be tight. We don't have any big bills coming due, but we do need to build up the bank account once again. I will be doing most of my shopping from the freezers, cupboard, fridge and hopefully the garden for the first couple of weeks. I also hope to cut our water and power bills by a little. Those are at least bills I can control, the rest are set and a bit harder to cut down. I may see about removing a few channels from the dish however that could add up to a big savings over the next while. We have the android box and can watch most movies on that.

I hope to have some pictures of my finished projects on Saturday. I may even manage to get the quilt sandwiched on the weekend.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Randomly On A Wednesday

It has been quiet here on the old homestead this past week. Just keeping on keeping on, if you know what I mean.

I tried out my mini doughnut maker.

This machine made us a great many mini doughnuts. Smothered in cinnamon sugar they hit the spot. Best yet I didn't heat up the house using the stove or using the oven.

The silly Woodpecker that either hops around our front lawn or travels to the back yard and pecks at the power poles..... Wouldn't trees yield more of what they are looking for????

I attended the Parish Council meeting this month, and I am not looking forward to the fallout that will happen. I am just glad that my position does not take a center stage position. Things could be very hot for awhile.

We got our property tax bill today. While it is under what we budgeted for I wonder what will happen a few years down the road. It seems as if all the city bills just keep getting higher and higher. Not that our services are getting any better however, and since our library levy has gone up by about 15%, I think I better start using the library a bit more often. I have finished all my hard copy books so a trip is in order.

All my spring cleaning is done now. I am sure glad that I have caught up. Pretty sure that next year I will not be subbing as much so things should be done much sooner in the fall when I start all over.

I have not completed all my goals for the month as of yet, so a great deal of time doing so over the next few days..... I hope to have my sewing and the cutting out of new patterns finished and since Harvey has cleaned up the basement perhaps I will find the room to finish the quilt (next weeks project).

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

Before Kris came home last weekend he mentioned a mop that he had bought to wash his walls with. Later on he sent a picture of said mop to me telling me that this made it so easy to wash his apartment walls and that he had done all but his bedroom walls in less than 2 hours.

I looked, and looked at the picture, thinking to myself "Boy does that look familiar." Here it is the same as the mop I already own, just has a different cloth on the end. Hmmm, my brain started clicking, I pulled some flannel out of my stash and made myself three cloths to fit on the end of the mop rather than the dust catcher I have. I am going to give it a try on the living room walls tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed, cause if it works I have just saved myself over $20.00, for the tiny cost of some time and leftover fabric.

I was planning to take the vehicle to the car wash tomorrow, but guess what it is pouring rain. That should get all the nasty dust off my car and not cost me a penny. It is also filling my rain barrel, and watering the plants and grass.

The past two nights have seen me using leftover packaged meats from roasts we had in previous meals. Yesterday I made Ham Pasties (4) we ate two for our meal. Tonight I made Zucchini Pork Bake and have two slices left of the 4 the recipe made. That gives me two more suppers this week, saving me electrical costs, and time (also saves me menu wise as I can use what I had planned to make at a later date...since Kurt will be home this is a good thing).

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Kurt phoned home last night to wish his dad a Happy Father's Day and just happened to inform us that he will probably be home on the 25th of this month. It seems that if the teachers have completed everything they need to do for the end of the year, they can head out on their various holidays. This could necessitate a bit of a change to my menu plans, but hopefully not to big a change.

Monday

Leftover ham and as I have some leftover puff pastry (as well as regular pastry) I think I might have a go at making some pasties. There should be enough for a couple of meals once I am done.

Tuesday

Leftover pork made into a casserole.

Wednesday

Clean out the fridge night.

Thursday

I will be using up the container of chili I have frozen. Served over pasta.

Friday

Trout, rice and a nice tossed salad.

Saturday

BBQ hot dogs, tin foil potatoes and carrots, and perhaps any leftover salad.

Sunday

Hopefully ham (I need to find one on sale), rice, and green beans.

There we go another week of menus, and I can see by my calendar I am going to have to do a bit more menu planning before the end of the month.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

We had a storm last night which made Mass almost unbearably hot. Hard to concentrate when you are busy wiping sweat from your brow, or making sure you don't stick to the pew!!

However the question Christ asked of the disciples still resonates today. "Who do you think I am?"

To me Christ is the Son of God, Lord of Light and in following him I have no need to be afraid. He will always be with me no matter what crosses this life gives me to bear. He will be there to help me carry them.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

Another chapter in my hopefully frugal life.

This past week was for the most very frugal. We are really trying to cut back on expenses for the most part (okay I seem to be doing the most of the cutting back, Harvey seems to be having a bit of a problem with the whole idea this month).

Once again I have been taking an early morning walk for exercise most days this week. I really need to extend the distance I walk this upcoming week.

Laundry was done mostly with a cold water rinse this week and all loads were hung up on the lines outside. Our Kris is home this weekend and of course has brought his laundry home with him (why pay over a dollar a load to wash and almost as much to dry). He is really good about making sure there are full loads to wash and always hangs on the outside lines during the spring, summer and fall.

Meals followed the menu plan I made for the month, if there were changes well it was just changing menus between days.

All leftovers have been used in other meals, and things are gradually being used up in the freezers.

Air conditioners have been turned off for a few days (been on a few) and windows opened during the night and early morning.

I really am trying to cut expenses where and when I can, but this month is a bad one. Property taxes are due, vehicle registration is due, and electrical costs will be high due to the need to use air conditioning. I will just keep on, keeping on.

Everyone have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

For some odd and unknown reason I woke up at 5 am this morning and was unable to go back to sleep. I don't think that there is anything bothering me, but one never knows what is going on in their subconscious.

Getting up early did enable me to get lots done before the day got too hot, and before I went to visit my friend. I am really glad that I took the time to go and see her. For the first time ever she did not seem to be her happy self and she told me that the constant pain she is in is finally getting to her. The doctor prescribed antidepressants and they seem to working a bit, but she is getting frustrated with not being as active as she used to be.

Her husband gave me a tour through their garden and while we were standing by my car thanked me for coming to visit. He said J was always so much better when she had company and I promised to come again soon. I think I will call in about 2 weeks and take the time to visit her once again.

Rain again last night making today hot and muggy. Right now we are under a severe thunderstorm watch and with the haze in the sky I am pretty sure we will get something. This does not look good for the weekend. Kris is coming home and the boys always go fishing on the Saturday of the Father's Day weekend. The constant daily or nightly rain is going to make the road leading to the fishing hole a sea of mud. Forecast for Saturday is more rain. Oh well perhaps they can bond bottling the beer that should be ready on that day.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Mid Month Update

I just can not believe that it is the middle of the month already!! Once again time seems to be getting away from me.

1. Finish the quilt (a carry over from last month).  Waiting for Hubby to clean a space in the basement for me to sandwich the quilt.

2.  Continue working on the rug. Perhaps even finish it.  Working on it, and while it might not be finished I can see an end in sight.

3.  Sew the three skirts I cut out last month.  Done.

4.  Sew the four tops I cut out last month.  Two down and two to go.

5.  Try for 20 no spend days this month.  I have reached 9 no spend days and am keeping my fingers crossed for a great second half of the month.

6.  Cut out 2 more tops.  Fabric and pattern chosen, just not done as of yet.

7.  Cut out another skirt.  Fabric and pattern chosen, just not done as of yet.

So far this month another 27 items have left the house. Some have been items that we thought we might be able to fix (no such luck), some were items that I was able to donate, and some were given to a friend. I do hope to add to this total by the end of the month.

Hubby did manage to get a couple of our solar lanterns working again and has hung them up. Two however will more than likely be heading into the recycle depot. He also got a few of our solar stakes working. Lovely little fairy lights throughout the yard.

I would love to be outside, enjoying our lovely weather but we have a slight problem. New neighbours moved in next door in 2015. Now when they first moved in everything seemed to be wonderful. They were quiet, had two small girls and would smile and say hello every day. As the weeks and months passed things became a bit strained in their household. The yelling started towards the end of last summer and has gotten progressively worse.

Things settled down a bit over the winter, but the last few days have seen an upswing in the yelling and foul language coming from that house. Surprisingly it is not the husband with the foul mouth it is the wife, and to make matters even worse, she doesn't care who hears her. This morning she was screaming right in front of the house. I actually feel sorry for the husband and very sorry for the children. This does make enjoying the outside a bit of a problem though. I am hoping the loud altercations stop very soon.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

We have been a bit stingy, I mean thrifty with our watering over the past few weeks. We have to be as water is very expensive after a homeowner reaches a certain level. It has been warm and dry and I have been using the rain barrel to water, Harvey has been hauling water from the barrel to the garden to give the veggies a drink. Well, the last couple of days has seen us get loads of lovely wet weather. I have only had to water the baskets hidden under the eaves, and best yet the rain barrel is full once again.

Harvey felt bad for me lugging watering can after watering can to each of my plants, so he decided to do something about it.

He found a small pump at a second hand shop, and rigged it up so I can attach a hose and water my plants with very little work. I will still have to haul water to the plants in front, but somehow carrying one or two watering cans seems much easier to me.

I also went to a garage sale down the street and picked up a small greenhouse for only $3.00. We have been looking for one for ages and to suddenly find one was amazing.

One of the teachers at the school I subbed in the most over the past few years asked if I would help make a small quilt out of fabric the children brought. Well on day was spent cutting the fabric into squares and today we began sewing. There is an abundance of the colours green and blue, so I looked through my scrap quilting squares when I got home. I have grabbed a few of various colours, just to add some variety and will sew them up here at home to take with me the next time I go. Saving the school buying more and cleaning out a bit of my stash which has grown over the past couple of years. I probably should add some strips to the mix as well. I don't think it will be finished by the end of the year, but we will give it a good old fashioned try.

I go shopping tomorrow and have my list and coupons ready. Here is hoping that the trip goes as planned and very little is spent. Got to come in under budget again since I was so far over budget last month.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

We started this Sunday like we do every Sunday. Coffee, and then off to Mass.

It being the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time in the church calendar we learned how much Jesus loves us. How He is always there for us showing us compassion, and forgiveness. Jesus' love is all inclusive, welcoming everyone. The welcome that Jesus offered his women disciples was countercultural and even shocking, something He was well known for. This inclusiveness should prompt us in this day and age to think about who we offer welcome to. Are we stingy and judgmental or do we give ourselves with love to all we meet? A question that I seem to be asking myself more and more as I age.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

Really, it has been a very quiet week.

Working on those projects and goals that I want done this month. This is so I can start some new projects and finish a few (okay at least start) that have been on my white board for awhile now.  Seems as if that is beginning to be all that I manage to do.

Out in the yard we have been busy weeding the gardens, watering the gardens, and enjoying a few lovely evenings sitting on the deck. One new item did take place this week. Harvey bought a small pump and rigged it up to the water barrel. No more hauling countless watering cans around the yard, I can now water pretty much everything with the hose after plugging in the pump.

Inside, well the usual household chores have been happening, as well as getting some spring cleaning done. Better late then never. I still have one room left to do and hope to get that one done tomorrow.

The beer brewing is moving right along and will need to be bottled on Wednesday, the Malbec will need to be bottled the next day. Should be drinking our home brew a couple of weeks later.

I have also been trying to figure out how much money we will need to save for our next trip. We are hoping to go to Italy and Greece in the near future.

As you can see, a rather laid back week on the prairies. Just the way we like them.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

1. Instead of renting movies I have been using my android tv box.

2. Baked 3 loafs of bread this week.

3. We got rain yesterday so no need to water the grass or gardens. The car also got a free wash down.

4. Used up all the leftovers in the fridge.

5. Bought a mini green house at a garage sale for $3.00.

6. Finished off my third skirt. Made the three skirts for a cost of one and a half bought in a store and had fun sewing them.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

I really meant to get back on the computer last night, check out some blogs, and write a post, however my body had different plans. I ended up crawling into bed early and not waking up until this morning.

This week has been fairly quiet. Today however is another story. We have watched dark clouds roll in and out all day and now it is almost black. The forecast is for severe thunderstorms and it actually looks like we might get them. I am hoping we don't have hail though as things are starting to look nice in the garden.

I have finished one of my goals for this month. I had planned on sewing three skirts and managed to get the last two finished today.

Now I move onto the tops. I hope to get all four done by the end of the week as the patterns are very simple.

Now a few shots of the garden at night.

Some small lanterns scattered in the trees. I picked these up at Dollarama for just a few dollars.

It is pouring rain right now and the thunder is starting. I better get off the computer before something bad happens.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

Ahh, another Tuesday has rolled around. The weeks are just whizzing by this year. Pretty sure they did other years, but when one is working things seem to all run together, especially in June, and when you work in a school.

I did a menu plan switch today in order to use a few things up.

On Friday neither Harvey or I could finish our maple glazed salmon so it went into a container and was popped in the fridge. I was sure Harvey would have it for his lunch, but that didn't seem to happen. So today I flaked up the leftovers, mixed them with a bit of mayo and some green onions to make a sandwich filling.

Then, since we hadn't finished the cream of mushroom soup I made and it was languishing in the fridge, I pulled that out as well.

Warmed up the soup, made some salmon sandwiches and served that for our supper.

Quick, filling, great use of leftovers, no real cooking involved on this hot day, and best yet, nothing wasted. A truly thrifty and frugal meal that cost pennies to make.

Thrifty is the way to go!

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Monday, June 6, 2016

Menu Monday

Monday

Tuesday

Leftover beef made into hot beef sandwiches, homemade fries, and the leftover salad.

Thursday

Baked spaghetti (clearing out the leftovers).

Friday

Tuna Pasta Salad.

Saturday

Clean out the fridge night.

Sunday

Roast Chicken, roast potatoes, roast carrots and a salad.

That is another week of June down. I think as we age the days pass by much faster.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Today was the 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time and something in Father Brian's homily struck me. I always learn something new at Mass, but having something touch me is sometimes a different story.

The readings had to do with healing. While we can not lay hands on someone and heal them of an affliction, we can like Jesus show compassion. We can show compassion in a very simple way, as Father Brian said, by holding the door open while entering or leaving church. I don't know how many times the door has swung shut in my face, usually when entering and if nothing else it makes me feel very unwelcome in that space.

How else can we show compassion? By just listening to peoples story, by being there to lend a hand when needed, by not spreading gossip, and by spending time with shut ins. All very simple, but sometimes hard to accomplish with our busy schedules.

This week I am going to take the time to be fully there for someone who just needs to talk.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

It has been a quiet week around the old homestead. I managed to get lots of extra cleaning done, and some work on unfinished projects. I am not going to post a picture of my rug until it is done but I do have a couple of pictures to share with you.

The first of my skirts sewn today. I am hoping to make another tomorrow.

A Rhubarb Crisp ready for us to enjoy over the next few days.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

I can not believe we are into June already. Where did May disappear to?

1.  Walked every day that we did not have rain. Free exercise.

2.   Baked bread in my new machine once, going to do it again tomorrow.

3.   Used up various leftovers in the fridge for another meal.

4.   The air conditioner has been off more then it has been turned on. It has been pretty cool here over the past week.

5.  Combined errands to save gas and wear and tear on the vehicle.

6.   Harvey is trying to brew his own beer. Once done the cost will be fifty-seven cents a bottle. Much less expensive than purchasing it. The price will go down as well because he needed to buy the bottles this time.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday, June 2, 2016

Thursday Tid Bits

The sun was shining over the past couple of days and I took full advantage of being able to sit on the deck in the evenings.

I love when the sun disappears and my solar lights flicker on.

My perennial garden lights starting to come on. The blue Chinese lantern hanging in the cherry trees.

One of the ceramic table lanterns casting wonderful patterns of light and shade.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

It's Here And My New Goals

While we were doing our stock up shop in Regina, I was also looking to replace my soon to die bread maker. I was looking for a particular brand and model but the one store that was supposed to carry it did not have it.

Kris, being the tech and online purchaser he is decided to look up the brand and model number on Amazon.ca. Well they had it with free delivery and at a much better price than it had been listed at for purchase at the store. Next thing I knew he had set me up an account and ordered the exact bread maker I wanted (of course he asked his Dad for the credit card).

Now, I really don't have much faith in our postal system being on time, so when Amazon said it would be here on Wednesday, I kind of just laughed and thought, "more likely a week from Wednesday".

To my surprise when Harvey checked the email they sent the package was already on the way. To my further surprise it actually arrived today!!

My new machine (or as Harvey would say my new toy).

Tomorrow I will use it to make the first loaf. Hopefully the recipe I used in the old one works in this one.

Time for a new set of goals for the month.

1. Finish the quilt (a carry over from last month).

2.  Continue working on the rug. Perhaps even finish it.

3.  Sew the three skirts I cut out last month.

4.  Sew the four tops I cut out last month.

5.  Try for 20 no spend days this month.

6.  Cut out 2 more tops.

7.  Cut out another skirt.

Those should keep me busy for awhile.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.
