Sunday Ramblings

Today was the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time and with it we once again heard the Nineveh story. However there was a slight twist today and an explanation I had never even thought about.

We all know that Jonah did everything he could not to follow God's request, what Father Brian explained was why! Jonah did not want the city to repent and he knew they would. He actually wanted God to punish them not forgive them for their transgressions.

Father Brian said if we understood this it would shake us up, make us think about forgiveness and how we forgive. Most of us hold grudges, don't let go of slights, and hurts. This is true and something I struggle with daily. We, according to Father Brian, don't really want to forgive.

I always thought I forgave people, but never really forgot what they did or said that hurt me, be it a total falsehood or the truth (cause you all know the truth can hurt). Today made me realize in order to really forgive a person must forget. The easy part is saying you forgive, the hard part is forgetting what you forgive them for.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. Thanks for mentioning your sermon. I am guilty of trying to forgive and not forget. I needed to hear this. Thank you :-)
