Household Chores

We all want to spend less time cleaning and doing household chores so that we can spend more time doing the things we enjoy. This could be taking a walk or hike, sitting outside enjoying the fall colours, working on our hobbies, or even cooking and baking.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I sort of follow what my mom did. Certain days are for certain tasks around the house. However, I can remember Mom removing wax build up on our kitchen floors late at night so as to keep us kids safe from the ammonia she used. Even with windows open one could smell it. She would be on her hands and knees applying the ammonia mixture and scrapping the old was off with a knife. I swore I would never, ever do that. Kept that promise too.

I keep a diary and every day there are certain tasks I do on that day. I also write down any appointments in there as well.

Once I have those written in I add the extra's like shopping, baking, working in the garden (in season), doing up the monthly budget and any extra cleaning tasks that need to be done.

Sure I do not get all things done every single day, but I have added a category called "unfinished" to some days that take care of those tasks.

Sometimes I even write down what the weather is like. That usually happens in the winter or when we have a heavy rain or strong wind.

By doing this most afternoons or late mornings I can take a walk or work on my hobbies until it is time to start the menu planned supper.

I am not sure if this would work for everyone, but perhaps you could try it out and see how this idea would work for you.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. I keep a daily journal as well - otherwise I would never remember all the things done.
I don't have certain days for things anymore - but mom sure did.

  2. I do my own laundry and the kitchen laundry on Mondays. Bailey is out of the house, so it’s a good time to catch up on that. Fridays is always garbage day, so I do have some things on certain days. I don’t use ammonia either.

  3. I used to do this when I was home with the boys and I had to be organized when I had my daycare in my home! I don’t know what happened but when my husband retired back in December 2020, it’s been hard for me to stay motivated. I don’t know what find on the days he is gone from the house, I cram in many chores, and I enjoy it.
You are definitely a role model, Jackie. You’re amazing. 🤩

  5. I've never been fixed to a schedule and I'm too lazy to write things down. When I was working everything seemed to get done on the weekends. After I retired, I did find myself tackling certain chores on certain days - Tuesday was always vacuuming and floor washing day. That has gone by the wayside living here with my daughter. Now, I do housework around her and my grandson's schedule...as soon as they leave the house, I try to get something done.

  6. You sound super organised Jackie. I have to admit that I do as little as possible, other than the small things needed to keep the house tidy on a daily basis, i.e. putting stuff away, laundry, washing up, sweeping floors, wiping surfaces, etc. There's too many other things I'd rather do with my time. I used to be better, but lately, I just don't have the motivation. Sometimes, I might get inspired or motivated to do a certain job, or I might do things when it gets to the point where the mess bothers me. If we've got visitors due or at certain times of the year i.e. Christmas, I will usually blitz the house, but otherwise I do the minimum. I know I probably sound super lazy, but it works for us, as none of us are bothered by a bit of dust. When I do blitz the house, it does feel good, but I can't sustain it on a regular basis and I don't particularly want to. I do admire people that do things regularly, but it's just not me I'm afraid.

  7. I don't have tasks for certain days on a regular basis like my mum did apart from stripping the beds, washing clothes, vacuuming etc on Sundays between 11am and 4pm when we have half price electricity. It's just too good to miss!

  8. My mother always did laundry on Mondays and up until her later years it was always hung outside to dry or if the weather was too wet it would be hung in the basement. I remember my Dad's long underwear standing up by itself in the corner after she brought it in from the line in mid-winter.
My housework chores are on a 'card system' - each of my household jobs are written onto individual small cards sorted by frequency and each day we pull out the jobs for the day. That way we both know what needs to be done and it's not overwhelming facing a huge clean.
