Menu Monday

Only a few weeks left till Christmas, which means I need to double my efforts at clearing out the bits and bobs from the fridge freezer. So far things are moving along very nicely.

Monday

Leftover ham made into a quiche.

Tuesday

Leftover Chicken made into creamed chicken and served on toast.

Wednesday

Clean out the fridge (eat the remainder of the quiche).

Thursday

Soup and sandwiches. I think I will use the ham broth and make a bean or split pea soup.

Friday

The perogies that I didn't make last week will be made.

Saturday

Sausage casserole.

Sunday

The last package of leftover ham, warmed, and served with mashed potatoes, and green beans.

The fridge freezer is slowly emptying and probably by this time next week there won't be much left to choose from.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

It is the First Sunday of Advent and I thought I would try and share with you all the talk our Archbishop gave online this morning.

It is definitely another way of looking at Covid-19 and what this pandemic is causing.

Frugal Friday

It has been another fairly quiet week on the old homestead. I continue to text Kurt to see how he is doing. Mama bear is always concerned.

It also seems as if blogger has decided not to do as I have asked it to and left align what I type. Oh well I will continue and see what happens next.

What frugal happenings have taken place?

1.  Used scrap fabric to make a case for my ereader.

2.  Saved $38.38 buying on sale groceries this week.

3.  Finished my sweater (jumper) and used up a couple of balls of yarn from my stash.

4.  Made sugar scrub for a fraction of buying it at Bath and Body or The Body Shop.

5.  Cleaning out the fridge freezer by using up bags of leftover meats. Still a ways to go, but I am getting there.

6.  Then of course their are the usual bread baking, watching water usage (got our bill today and it is a hundred and some dollars less than my friends...wonder if they have a leak), and walking for free exercise.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

P.S.
Notice that Blogger is actually doing what it is supposed to now.

Thursday Tidbits

Wishing all who celebrate Thanksgiving today a joy filled day. I know that this is probably not the celebration that you had planned, but the love you share with your families and friends can travel miles.

No Real Lockdown

I almost went shopping today, lately I get my retail therapy trying to keep our grocery bill down. Not that I have succeeded, but I try. There was a rumor going around here that our province was going to put some hefty restrictions on what businesses could be open and which would have to close down for a few weeks.

I almost but not quite believed that stores would shut down to non essential shopping (Christmas is coming and a great deal of what I need to pick up yet could be considered non essential). I did not fall for it. Instead I thought to myself, that if things did indeed shut down for a couple of weeks, there was always online shopping that could be accomplished to finish off the Christmas list.

Nothing is shutting down here for the most part. Instead now masks are mandatory in offices even where the public can't go, children will be wearing masks at all times except when eating in schools (this includes pre schools, children aged 2 and under are exempted as well), dining out will be a bit more difficult as people must be seated 3 meters apart and only 4 at a table, sports teams can no longer play games, and we are supposed to follow all the rest of the public health restrictions and mandates. Churches are back to only 30 allowed to attend.

In retrospect I really do not think that the province went far enough as we still have people flaunting the rules. In my city there have been 3 large parties that got ticketed and at least 2 people fined for not wearing masks.

We also still have many that think only the elderly are affected so why worry about it. I wonder how they would feel if it was their parent or grandparent who passed away because of someone's idea of freedom. Then there are those who say those with an underlying condition are probably the biggest part of the statistic for deaths. What they don't seem to realize is that if the person had not gotten Covid-19 they probably would not have died. You can't seem to get that through their heads no matter how you try and explain.

I have given up.

Stay safe and follow the rules.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

Another week of managing the household as economically as possible. Though with rising prices this is becoming a bit of a challenge.

I have been cleaning out the fridge freezer over the past week. Using up the bits and bobs that seem to have accumulated. This meant no real roast meal this week, instead I managed to heat up some ham (thus saving the ham in the freezer for later). I also used up most of a package of frozen leftover beef. Slowly but surely using those items up and getting the most from my grocery dollars.

I have been making sure the dishwasher is completely full before running it, and only handwashing dishes once a day. Really until baking begins washing dishes once a day is no problem. After all the dirty dishes for the most part are in the dishwasher. Saves water, dish soap, and time.

Today I made myself a new nightie. Probably about 8 months ago I purchased some rather inexpensive knit fabric. Perfect for what I needed, and I have a new nightgown for about half the cost of buying one in the shops. Better quality for the most part as well.

I froze a leftover banana to be used later to make either muffins or a tea loaf.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

How can it be that time passes by so quickly, during a time when we are all shut in and unable to do the things we are used to doing. I am not going to complain though, I really am happy that I can keep my days full and help with the passage of days.

Monday

Spaghetti and meat sauce. Should be enough leftover to make another meal later this week (on Wednesday to be exact).

Tuesday

Leftover ham (last bag of frozen from the fridge freezer) made into a casserole. Tossed salad as a side.

Wednesday

Baked spaghetti, and the remains of the salad.

Thursday

Leftover ham casserole, along with some extra veggies.

Friday

Perogies. I will more than likely make Lazy Perogies, but a small batch.

Saturday

The Baked Spaghetti leftovers will hit the table tonight. I am not sure but I think I will make some sprouts to go along with it.

Sunday

It's our usual roast meal night, but I am going to pull a package of frozen beef roast from the fridge freezer and do something with it. Perhaps roast beef sandwiches, coleslaw and home made fries.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Things have calmed down a bit, or at least I have calmed down. I talked to Kurt again tonight and he is feeling okay. He says he gets very tired easily, and his sense of smell might be off a bit, but other than that and a bit of a cough he is doing well.

I didn't tell you all yesterday, but he was also having a bit of a plumbing problem and needed a plumber to snake out his sewer line as things were backing up a bit. Of course because he had Covid no one would come. The poor guy thought he was going to have to live in filth for 10 or so more days.

Well he was letting another friend know that he had Covid and the conversation morphed to his plumbing problem. His friend managed to get ahold of someone who had one of the big electronic snakes that plumbers use and brought it over to him. This wonderful friend even helped him carry it into the house and down the stairs as Kurt said it probably weighed 300 pounds.

Plumbing fixed, and I have a happy (or at least as happy as possible) son.

He will be doing live streaming of his classes starting tomorrow until he can get back in the classroom, and has friends who are phoning and checking on him often. I can breath once again.

Today I got the tree finished, while watching Christ the King Mass live streamed from the cathedral, and it doesn't look bad at all. Christmas is slowly arriving in our home. Pictures of decorations once I am totally finished will follow. I even have an Advent program to follow online.

My baking/candy making list is hopefully complete and I will start on that right away in December. Things are definitely getting down to the crunch.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

A very short post tonight and not really a roundup of the week.

I am a bit discombobulated. This morning our oldest son Kurt called to give us a bit of news. He had developed a bit of a cough on Tuesday and so following the Covid-19 protocols for schools in Alberta he left and went and got a test.

Last night (well very early this morning actually) he got his results. He has Covid-19. Not a bad case really according to him, but now he is in quarantine, and staying home. This means he will need a sub teacher for the next 13 or so days.

Also he is 9 hours away from us and there is absolutely nothing that we can do to give him a hand.

He has promised me and his Dad that if things take a sudden turn for the worst he will head to the hospital immediately. Kurt does say there is one bright spot in this whole thing, and that is he will be immune for at least a month (perhaps 6) and so won't worry about bringing it home to us at Christmas.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

PS

He did follow all protocols and has no idea of how he managed to catch it. He did say the virus is really making the rounds in the town he lives in.

I will visit you all tomorrow, right now I have to do some more pacing, and worrying.

Frugal Friday

Another week has disappeared, even with this pandemic the time is flying by. Christmas is just around the corner and will be here before we know it.

My frugal five (or six) for the week....

1.  Kept drapes open on sunny days which solar heated the front of the house. Kept the drapes closed on cold cloudy days to keep the heat from the furnace in the house.

2.  All meals made at home using items in the freezer, fridge or pantry.

3.  All leftovers eaten either in another meal or for our lunches. Harvey said Butter Chicken tastes great in a sandwich.

4.  Saved $22.98 at the grocery store and $3.41 on items bought at Walmart.

5.  Baked 2 loaves of bread this past week for a savings of about $2.50.

6.  Put $35.00 of my leftover allowance in the savings envelope and another $9.85 in the change jars.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tidbits

Snow is once again falling, but tomorrow the temperatures are supposed to rise. That means we will end up with icy slush once again. The joys of winter on the Canadian prairies.

I managed to get both my quilt tops sandwiched this week. However, I decided that I needed the quiet of hand stitching and have started to hand quilt the first quilt. Hmmm, I had forgotten how long that takes. I have a feeling I will be extremely lucky to finish one top this week. Oh, well, I am enjoying the needle going in and out of my fabric and seeing how far I manage to get every day. If I only get one done that is just fine. After all I have all winter to get these quilts completed (well maybe not all winter, but a good portion of it). There really is something soothing about hand stitching.

Bible study has been cancelled due to new Covid-19 restrictions. This happened with the last study as well. I phoned 8 of the participants today to let them know. Most had already received the email, so why I needed to phone was totally beyond my understanding.

Harvey pulled out the Christmas tree today. I have decided to set it up down in the basement. May as well not give Kris's cat Eiko the temptation to climb. Hopefully I can get decorating it this weekend. I might pull out some of the totes of other decorations and start putting them up. I miss seeing my Nativity ornaments and some of the bigger ornaments I have made or collected over the years.

I am thinking of getting Harvey to cut some box shaped pieces out of wood and painting them up like gifts to use outside on the front deck.

Baking/candy making list will be done this weekend and then the first two weeks of December will see me stirring, mixing and spending loads of time in the kitchen.

The province has mandated masks to be worn in all indoor public places and has set a limit on the number of people that can gather in your home. They would prefer that only those who live in the home gather, but since the number is 5 pretty sure we will have both Kurt and Kris for Christmas if at all possible. These new mandates are for a month and on the 17th of December will be re-evaluated. Hope they don't change or even lift them a bit back to the 10 gathering that they had before.

I went shopping the last two days. Split it over two days as I did not want to spend too much time today shopping (thought there would be the study and if the weather turned bad...which it sort of did) I wouldn't be traveling too far on icy roads. I managed to get in and out of the stores with very little trouble. I am all stocked up now and will not be heading out again until late next week and then only to one store to pick up produce and dairy (unless turkeys are on sale).

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

I thought I should remind myself of what the word thrifty means. In the Collins Gage Canadian Dictionary I found this....

thrift- economical management, the habit of saving

Thrifty is the adjective to describe such accomplishments.

I love the sound of economical management. Classy.

So how did I economically manage my household this week, what did I actually do for thriftiness.

I did some mending, which makes clothes last longer.

Opened drapes on the beautiful sunny days to allow light and heat into the house.

Used up all leftovers to make new meals or to eat for lunches.

If I used the oven it was for more than one item.

Used scraps, and remnants to make Christmas gifts or useful items for around the house.

All leftover change and bills were put in either jars or the money envelope and saved.

The fact is when you run a thrifty house, being frugal just happens. The two go hand in hand quite nicely as I have found.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

I am up way to early today. The brain woke up at 4 and since that time I have not been able to go back to sleep. I actually should have grabbed my book and read for a bit (that will usually allow me to shut things off) but instead I got up and started my day. If I was a napper that is where I would head this afternoon, but I am not so will end up paying for this wakefulness down the road a piece.

Monday

Leftovers from Saturday supper. Thats baked ribs, served with the remainder of the cauliflower and sprouts.

Tuesday

Leftover chicken from the freezer. I think I will make tetrazzini as that should give me our meal for Thursday....Just heat and serve.

Wednesday

Soup and sandwiches. I think egg salad sandwiches and a veggie soup of some kind, or perhaps I will try something new.

Thursday

Leftovers from Tuesday, kind of a planned clean out the fridge night.

Friday

Salmon casserole, salad and peas.

Saturday

Chicken burgers, and fries (made in the air fryer of course). Leftover salad as well.

Sunday

Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans and perhaps some carrots.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

It has been a quiet day, one in which I worked on and finished my Bible Study homework, and watched Mass once more on the television. Things are locking down once again, and it could be awhile before we actually get all the parish together to celebrate. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we can finish this study, unlike the one at the beginning of the pandemic.

I am finding this study to be a bit more difficult to really get into. Part of it could be that there is no small group sharing, and part of it could be that I really have never understood the Psalms. Even though they are a big part of Catholic liturgy (and Jewish liturgy as well) I have always thought of them as just something that was a book in the Bible, and not an easily understood one either. I have been getting a little more insight into them over the past weeks, but I am not sure if they will ever be my favourite portion of scripture.

The hidden meanings escape me, the images that are invoked don't make sense to me. The only one I enjoy is the 23rd, that one brings me peace and a sense of love and forgiveness, of someone watching out for me, keeping me safe from all harm.

Perhaps by the time this study is over I will have the clarity and understanding that I seem to be searching for.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

The night draws in much quicker now and the temperature drops, I get up most mornings to a lovely coating of frost on the car windshield. Since I only use the car once a week, I only have to scrape the frost off on my early morning trip to do my shopping. The rest of the time the sun when it is out takes care of the removal for me.

It has been a very strange week. For months both Harvey and I have been wishing that our provincial government would mandate mask wearing in public enclosed places, and finally on Friday it happened.

What scares me however is here in our city there has been very little outcry by the anti maskers as of yet. This after what seems like months of them screaming that masks do absolutely nothing to protect from the Covid-19 virus. It makes me wonder what they have up their sleeves.

Our highschool here also went to level 3. This means the students will be divided and only attend school as a new group every second day. When one group is not in school there will be online learning happening.

This is only going to be for the next 28 days starting on Monday to hopefully bring our numbers down. I do wish they would mandate masks until this is over.

Other than Harvey suffering a bit of Covid fatigue, things are much the same as usual. I keep working on projects, cleaning the house and going for walks. Anything helps to keep one reasonably sane during these times. Now that winter is here we can no longer work in the yard (until the snow deepens and the shoveling and snow blowing begins) so Harvey is stuck inside a bit longer. He has been going for an afternoon walk, and I plan on pulling out his "Happy Light" and getting that set up tonight or tomorrow morning.

I finished my pouch for my phone and tonight I just finished the mug rugs. I do need to work in the ends though. Tomorrow I am going to work on getting envelopes made for my Christmas cards and even hopefully get some ready to be mailed. I will draw a new project number to work on sometime Monday.

Christmas baking will begin very soon, and I have managed to stock up on a few items for that purpose. I make very few cookies now (Harvey and I really don't need them) but I love making candy. Brittles, almond bark, peanut butter cups, mints, chocolate dipped pretzels, and other sweet treats abound here at Christmas. I make squares as well. Of course I share with Kurt and Kris, but as they all say, I do go a bit overboard.

I still don't know if we will join the family get together for Christmas Day. There are never any cousins present so the evening is probably quite boring for our sons. They have never complained about sitting with the old folk, but I am sure I have seen a few eye rolls every so often. Also I am not sure how many people will be attending and since we have to stay at 10 people gathering, that could be a problem. I do have some time to think about it and make a decision.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

The end of another week of frugal endeavors. Really not much new in that department around here.

1.  I managed a few more no spend days this week and raised my total for the month to 11 no spend days.

2.  Baked 2 loaves of bread saving about $1.50 and had the satisfaction of knowing exactly what was in each loaf.

3.  Saved $44.45 on groceries this week just buying sale items.

4.  Bought 10 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts for $2.99 a pound which was the cheapest they have been here in months.

5.  Mended my favourite cashmere sweater, I should now get at least another years wear out of it.

6.  Used up lots of food leftovers.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

The last few days have been very cold, which of course means walking indoors, and getting projects completed.

I didn't really like how the first project this week turned out so I redid it in another fashion. I will still use the one that didn't turn out quite right to store some electronic cords and chargers in when we travel. I do like the way the second phone case turned out though and so does Harvey. He would like me to make him one only it has to have a belt loop. Perhaps it will be added to his Christmas gift. The great thing is these used up some scrap fabric and lining material. Just as the pot holders and oven mitts did. I find it amazing how much scrap fabric and remnants I have.

I have been using leftover bags of roasts from the freezer. I can usually get two meals out of those itty, bitty bags of frozen leftover meat. Casseroles and stir fries really stretch things out.

I have done some mending again this week. This time it was a favourite sweater that I bought in Scotland a few years back. I think I am wearing it out.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Before I list our weekly menus I will answer a couple of questions from my last post.

I found an image on my Cricut design space (the snowflakes) and used them to make the decals for the ornaments. I think as I grow more used to this machine and what it can do I may just manage to use some more complicated decals. I would love to make some for our sons next Christmas.

I was also asked how many projects I have listed. Last month I had 12 projects listed, so some were carried over to this month. This month I have 10. This is so if I draw the same number more than once I can have something different to work on and not get frustrated with the same project.

Monday

Stuffed Chicken, rice, and corn.

Tuesday

Leftover pork roast which I think will be made into a stir fry so I can use up the leftover rice and cauliflower.

Wednesday

Hamburgers, homemade fries, and salad.

Thursday

Clean out the fridge night.

Friday

Not sure if it will be fish fillets or soup and egg salad sandwiches.

Saturday

Baked ribs, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies.

Sunday

Roast Chicken, mashed potatoes, carrots and salad.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

I promised you all some pictures of what I have been up to this week.

I finished one pair of oven mitts (they will be mine), and 4 rather large pot holders for Kurt and Kris.

Then baked a loaf of bread. We seem to be going through a great deal of bread this week.

I then moved on to downloading some free books to my ereader. I found 5 that interested me.

Just lunch I decided that I needed to get those ornaments finished. After all I drew that number so in keeping with my urge to complete projects I got down to work.

I picked a very simple vinyl decal and only made a couple of slight errors. I got better at putting them on with every one.

We are in the midst of a bit of an ice storm right now so I thought I would try and take a picture of one of the branches that are covered in ice. Forgive the blur.

Snow will be arriving shortly, and I am hoping that it isn't the accumulation the weather people are talking about.

I drew another number and managed to draw another small project. I am going to make a case to carry my phone in. I picked out the fabric and will begin on it tomorrow. Planning on having it done by Wednesday so I can choose another number.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

This month I promised myself I would post each and every day. Yet yesterday got away from me quite quickly and before I knew it I was crawling into bed and just wanting to sleep. Hopefully I do better over the rest of the month.

Now what frugal things are happening here....

1.  Grocery savings were not that high this week. I only managed to save $14.93 on the total bill.

2.  Our power bill appeared via email and seems a bit high. I think it is an estimate. I really wish our provincial power company would get back to reading the meter every month. There estimates in our case are usually out by a great deal. This makes it hard to budget for.

3.  Using remnants of fabrics up making some more gifts for Kurt and Kris. However the pattern for the oven mitts just hasn't worked out. They fit me. So using other remnants I am fashioning some pot holders that are slightly bigger and they can be used to lift hot containers out of the oven. I am actually using the same techniques as the oven mitts, just changing them slightly. Hopefully pictures tomorrow.

4.  My walks are always frugal and while the weather stays nice I will be doing them outside. Might not last much longer considering the forecast for the weekend.

5.  Since I am helping with the Bible Study I don't have to pay for it (savings of $60.00). While I am not enjoying this one quite as much as others I am enjoying getting out and the discussions.

6.  Cashed in some survey points and will be receiving a gift card to be used in buying some books for my ereader.

Everyone have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Wednesday Thoughts

The American election is still not over yet and it seems as if it is going to be closer than thought. Nerve wracking for our southern neighbours I am sure.

I have made one pair of oven mitts, but realized that they are for women. I guess no one figures men cook and need them as well. So I am going to make some larger pot holders for them. I should be finished with these by the end of the week and will be able to pick another project. All I can say is thank heavens for leftover fabrics from other projects so I can say this gift is going to cost me very little. I will post pictures of everything on Saturday.

We will be heading into a storm this weekend that could give us a foot of snow. No snow tires on the SUV as of yet. Harvey says he is going to phone on Monday.

Other than that all is the same here. We have had a mask mandate put into effect in our largest cities. The bad thing is our provincial government is not going to enforce it. Instead they are hoping everyone who lives in them will be compliant to the rules. Already there are those who are arguing once again that our rights are being taken away. I really want to shake each and every one of them. We will need to wait and see what happens.

To all of you under a lockdown I pray that everything goes the way your governments hope.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

It is the end of what has been a week of ups and downs, worry and heartache. There are things are eldest son is going through that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy (but as a Mama Bear I do wish that bad things would happen to those who are putting him through this once again). Some day I may tell you all what the situation is.

As far as thrifty happenings here on the old homestead, there have been a few.

The Butternut squash pie turned out pretty good. It does actually taste like pumpkin pie. This gives me the courage to try some loaves and muffins with it.

I did some mending on a few seams, and even put a new zipper in a pair of pants. Well not really a new zipper but one I salvaged from an old pair of pants years ago. I knew that it would come in handy some day.

I couldn't repair the old knit blanket it was just too far gone. I ended up salvaging the yarn and it will be used in new projects. Perhaps even the mug rugs that are on my project list.

I cut out two pairs of oven mitts today from fabric left from other projects. I hope to start sewing them tomorrow.

Talked to the youngest Kris today. He lives in one of the cities that now have a mask for indoor spaces. I think I just might make a few more for him. The health region is now saying 3 layer masks are better. I could make more filters for him to use and that would give the masks he has three layers. I wonder if I could find some that could be washed.....

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

Now here I went and planned hearty stick to your rib meals and the weather has changed. Today we reached 16 C. A perfectly lovely day. Great for going out for a walk or two. Mind you I slept in (got involved in a novel last night and read for a bit too long).

I also want to thank everyone for the lovely compliments. I really do not deserve them.

Monday

Leftover Chili from Saturday night. I was going to serve it over pasta, but will make us each a slice or so of toast to eat with it.

Tuesday

I will be pulling a bag of leftover roast beef from Sunday out of the fridge freezer and fashioning a casserole or perhaps grinding it up and making a roll served with mushroom sauce and a salad.

Wednesday

Pulling a bag of leftover ham from the fridge freezer and making that ham pasta bake I didn't do last week. We will finish the salad as well.

Thursday

Clean out the fridge night.

Friday

Glace and eggs, along with lots of fried onions and butter (not the best of meals for my cholesterol, but it reminds me so much of my Mom when money was a bit tight...No worries as we are doing just fine).

Saturday

Baked ribs, rice, and mixed veggies. I will more than likely make a salad here as well.

Sunday

Pork roast, salad, mashed potatoes and corn.

Any food that isn't used in clean up the fridge night will be used for lunches (which reminds me I have some salmon that I am going to make into a sandwich spread tomorrow).

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Quick post tonight as it is getting late. I am tired, but not because of overworking.

I made my list of chores for next month, drew a number for a project to work on this week. It's an easy one, just pulling apart an old afghan, washing the yarn and rolling it into balls for use in other projects. Just in case we are locked down.... Must have things to do to stay occupied and sane. Since this is a relatively quick project I should be able to draw another number mid week. Hopefully another short easy to do one.

I was under total budget for the month which is a good thing. I even had 25 days where I stayed home and spent nothing at all. Combining errands is a thrifty and frugal thing to do.

I used my Cricut and made some Christmas cards.

There are 12 cards, 6 of each pattern. I may make some more if I have some extra time.

Two of the butternut squash in the hallway were used to make pie. Harvey really seems to like it. Me, well I am not too sure. I bet the last one or a package of frozen would make wonderful muffins or loaves though.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.
