Harvey took me shopping this afternoon, and now he gets to see how much prices have risen since the last time he shopped with me. Let's say about 5 or so years ago. I think he was a bit flabbergasted by costs. He also got to watch me put items back on the shelf because there was no way on God's green earth I was going to pay that asking price.
I did manage to get a few items at a decent sale price, but many of the items we needed were just not discounted very much at all.
As for the items I added to the pantry for $10.00 I managed to get 3 cans of mandarins for $1.50 each and three cans of evaporated milk to use in baking for $1.27 each. Hoping to get some canned meats and more canned fruit next time. It was a bit less than the amount, but anything more would have put me over the pantry shopping limit.
While checking out the beef roasts, I got into a conversation with a beef rancher. He told me that they had sold all their steers and only kept the heifers, mainly because they were worried about the lack of moisture on the pastures. He said beef prices are going to probably get much higher over the next while. I have also noticed that once prices go up, the very rarely come down. I so wish that we had yellow stickers, or some of the ways that easterners in bigger centers have to save. Heck our youngest son can sometimes take advantage of yellow sticker meat as well.
I have added some tins of salmon and tuna to the bag that will be donated to the Food Bank here at the end of lent. Next time I go shopping in two weeks, I will pick up some pasta and pasta sauce. I am trying to put together enough to perhaps feed a couple of families. Thinking some treats closer to the end of Lent would be a nice addition.
Changed my mind on supper tonight. As we have lots of softening potatoes in storage, I am going to use up my homemade perogy and then next week use up more of the softer potatoes to make a batch or two for the freezer downstairs.
Everybody have a wonderful evening.
God bless.

I LOOOOVE pierogies! Grew up eating and I love to make them. Really fun. Do you have a Grocery Outlet or Aldi? I got great deals there this week. Just love it.
ReplyDeleteDear Jackie, I am glad you managed to get at least a few items at decent prices. Those prices keep rising. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteI think many are just subbing one thing for another when things are too expensive. I stay away from certain products and just replace with others.
ReplyDeleteTrying to eat healthy is a challenge as it is, let alone choosing items that are good for us and don't cost an arm and a leg.
ReplyDeleteIt is always interesting to take our menfolk grocery shopping with us Jackie as I think they are often surprised & shocked at the prices of things. I find this when my husband comes with me, which is not often. xx
ReplyDeleteMy husband was surprised by prices, too. I’m working hard to not waste too much food. We used to throw away so much when the kids were home. It goes back in the freezer these days. Sometimes, i’ll take a plate to neighbors. I’m the crazy neighbor who makes brownies and cupcakes and make goodie drops.
ReplyDeleteNone of my stores (none) have mark downs! It is sickening how the grocery stores get away with it. Publix is the worst. I only buy BOGO's from them, never meat. I usually go to Aldi for mea or walmart. I WISH I could buy direct drom a farmer, but I would have to win the lotto to do that. So frustrating. IDK what is happening to this world.
ReplyDeleteThere have definitely been less yellow sticker items here in the UK when I go shopping. Not sure if I'm just timing it wrong or that they are getting snapped up as soon as they go out. OH could do to come shopping with me a bit more. He has no idea how much more expensive groceries are these days.
ReplyDeleteThere is definitely potential for drought this years, even with the massive dumps of snow. What melted previously was evaporated into the air because the ground was frozen. Hopefully we'll see more snow in March and April....but over a longer period of time. These huge amounts of snow at one time are tiring.
ReplyDeleteGlad Harvey got to see what you're dealing with at the store. 5 years! I bet it was a real eye-opener.
Our grocery store rarely has the markdown stickers as well. I don't think I time my shopping particularly well to find them, but they are also rare & not worth scouring for, given the frequency. I know some stores do it on a consistent day/time, to give folks the opportunity to plan around it. We've started getting one rotisserie chicken a week, because it is so cheap compared to regular chicken. - Hawaii Planner
ReplyDeleteCould you elaborate on what yellow stickers are? I'm assuming they signify markdowns. It's very rare to see mark downs on meat here but we always check out the fruits and veg's and quite often get some things cheaper than paying full price.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I go to the store I am flabbergasted at the prices.
