Tuesday Tidbits and Stuff

 Another hot day so I was out early working in the garden. Scared the little bunny out of the Columbines once again. This time when I said something it actually stopped and looked at me. Then rapidly hopped down the side of the house.

Most of the weeding is completed, I hope to get a bit more done after the dentist tomorrow morning, and then Hubby has cleaned out the herbal planter and the other two small planters I use for herbs. I hope to get those planted tomorrow as well. The rhubarb needs picking and processing as well. 

The deck pots will be done on Thursday as I still need to find some small trellis like inserts for the Moonflowers. As I will be spending money at the dentist, I will stop on the way home at Dollar Tree to see if they have anything. There will also be a pickup of Harvey's one prescription, and the bank for our allowances. No spending after that for a few days I hope (wish it was until the end of the month, but there is the church envelope).

After the planting I came in and got the bedding changed over, the fridge tidied, the living room totally dusted, and next months menu plan worked on.

The afternoon was spent trying to get the second corner of the embroidered quilt block completed. I am almost there. Not too sure if I can get a start on the third corner though (would be awesome).

I have been asked about how one can make grilled cheese sandwiches other than on the stove in a fry pan. Years ago my mother would use a cookie sheet and get enough sandwiches made at once to feed us hungry children. She would put the bread slices on the cookie sheet (buttered). Top with a slice of cheese, then place another buttered bread slice on top and stick them in the oven. I did the same when Kurt and Kris were younger and eating us out of house and home. 

I hope to have a Saturday post this week with pictures of the projects and gardening done over the past month. Been pretty darn good at remembering to take photos.

Home Sweet Home...Or Is It?

 

Well we are home once again from our travels. I am going to spend the next couple of days catching up with all of you and catching up with all the garden produce. This really was not the time to go on vacation, but we did have so much fun. 

Hopefully the garden will be finished with in the next few days and I can get back to regular posting and also fill you in on all our travels.

Right now I am going to start trying to catch up on all of your posts while we have been gone.

Saturday Roundup

 

There really are not many completed items to share with all of you this week. It has been more a week of trying to get things done or at least worked on. 

I have been knitting mittens and am on the 7th pair. My fingers are not as nimble as they used to be and one of them keeps locking up on me at the worst possible times. I have pulled lots of partial balls and skeins to use up on this project and it really seems to be working quite well on getting things cleared out. I am of course saving some of the leftovers from this project, to cut up for the rug project. 

Weaving is moving along, I probably have 7 1/2 inches of the first tea towel done. I need to measure one of the ones in my drawer to see how long I should make these. 

The rest of the week I have been watering plants outside, weeding, doing laundry, regular household tasks and harvesting rhubarb. 

I should have one more harvest of rhubarb this year. I have also been looking at some of the chokecherry trees near my home. I am hopeful that as long as a really strong wind does not appear I should be able to forage enough to make some jelly. 

Harvey was going to do a beer kit today, but it is really windy out now that he has decided not to use my new range. He does not want to "Break it". He is a bit worried about the weight of the water on the surface of the range. He does need to use a great deal of water. Now he will use the side burner on the BBQ to boil everything. 

The neighbour to the west of me has pretty much moved out of the house that she was renting. However her brother seems to still be in the house. I find that very strange as pretty much everything has been moved out and he was never on the rental agreement in the first place. He also does not seem to have a job, or if he does it is very part time. Perhaps he is only staying there until the end of the month. Only time will tell. I probably know the brother better than his sister as he was one of my students when I was an EA. 

On our trip we will not be entering the United States at all. We are on the Canadian side during the trip to Niagara Falls, and will in fact be spending the night in a hotel on that side. I believe we get to take a trip on the boat to the bottom of the falls, and if the weather is not conducive to that we get to go through the tunnels. I think that there is a bit of free time, and I really would love to see some of the places we visited when I was a child.

I am off to set the table and get some veggies started for our supper.

Tuesday Tidbits and Stuff

 

The day started off sunny but cool and now has become cloudy and cool. Almost cool enough that I wish I hadn't quite moved all my wardrobe around. Still I have sweaters to layer, so will do just fine. 

It is supposed to be nice tomorrow so I will move the plants back outside to keep hardening them off. Looking forward to getting into planting very soon. Of course I still need to purchase more plants, but as things are planted and I get a better sense of what I need things will begin to be filled and placed. 

Things are being gathered for the new projects this month. I am actually almost finished the jacket, mostly hand sewing now after giving the whole thing a good pressing tomorrow. I also need to press all the 4" squares I am using in the next quilt top. This flimsy is going to be made with as many plaid fabrics as possible. My next one might be made with as many flowered fabrics as possible, or it might be a denim one. 

Still have the curtains in the front of the house to wash, and since tomorrow is supposed to be fairly nice I will probably get those done as well. I may even give bagels a try tomorrow. That is something that has been on my mind for awhile now, I wonder how much or how little they will cost. As the old saying goes, "A penny saved, is a penny earned." Those pennies definitely add up. 

Since I have to stick close to home for the next while waiting for a phone call about an appointment things are going to be completed around here in record time. When we go to Kris's on the long weekend, the phone will be forwarded to my cell for at least the Friday, if I haven't gotten the call before we leave. 

Today Harvey is out planting onions, so the garden is mostly worked up now. All that is left are tomatoes, cukes, peppers, eggplant, and whatever else he decides he wants to give a try to. Hopefully some rutabaga and some lettuce for sure.

Slowly But Surel

 

Today I started my planting. I managed to actually get quite a few of my pots planted and watered those I had planted earlier. Still lots to do and I hope to get even more done tomorrow and Sunday afternoon. I have found that I can only plant a certain number and then need to rest. Still things are finally going in the ground.

I also have an area cleared in my sewing/craft room for my loom to be set up. Harvey and I will put it together probably the first week of June and then the weaving begins!!!! So very exciting. Still lots to clean up and put away in that part of the house, but things are once again slowly but surely moving forward. As I use things up storage is cleared and much of what is on the floor in boxes and totes is being put where it belongs. 

Tomorrow I will be making up my new project list, the extra cleaning list and working on my monthly menu plan. I have to thank a reader (you know who you are) for all the lovely ideas to use up the glut of oranges. Those muffins sound amazing. Thank you so much. These will definitely be made once we eat the blueberry and applesauce muffins. 

I got an email from HomeScan with a number of reasons why they were contacting me. For some reason they don't give you a reason why they are warning you, but I giggled at one of the reasons.... Many families the size of yours spend more money. Hmmm, this is a frugal household and only two people live here. I wonder how much other families spend as I sometimes think I am spending too much. The other reason was that I was having lots of scanning without codes. Well fruit, produce and some such items do not have codes other than the ones they give me in their books. I really like this point giving site as the points do really add up quickly. Hopefully they keep me on.
