Thrifty and Frugal Thursday

Thrifty and Frugal

It is another lovely and smoke free day here on the old homestead. I had a visit to get my teeth cleaned at the dentist this morning so along with the middle of the month bills a bit of cash has been spent.

So what thrifty and frugal things have been taking place here on the Phillips homestead.

1.  I hung two loads of clothes on the lines downstairs as Monday was slightly drizzly.

2.  Had a free coffee at a friends one day this past week.

3.  Combined as many errands as possible to save on fuel, plus wear/tear on the vehicle.

4.  Picking veggies from the garden rather than purchasing.

5.  Dehydrating herbs, freezing various veggies as well.

6.  Got free apples and plums from the neighbours trees when looking after the yard and house.

7.  Shopped using a list and stuck to the list. Things have gotten a bit more expensive but I am doing my best to keep things under or at budget.

8.  Using up what is available here at home before putting it on the list.

9.  Got free toothpaste, free floss and a free toothbrush at the dentists.

10.  Will be putting $75.00 in the savings envelope and $9.55 in the savings jars this week.

So what frugal, thrifty things have you been up to this week?

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. Hi Jackie .. I'm just catching up on your posts again - I am pleased to read that the smoke has cleared for you. I am due to go to the hygienist for a teeth clean next week & Yes we get free toothpaste & floss too. Mind you, they build it into the price but its good to look after our teeth. Have a great day Jackie. xx

  2. We haven’t done it yet but we’re talking about growing winter vegetables. This would be a first and since it’s our rainy season we wouldn’t have a water. We’re still fairly sunny here. I know others who grow cool weather veggies. It would be nice to serve something we grew from our own garden for Thanksgiving. And you’re the one who has inspired me. lol Now it’s following through and not procrastinating.

  3. Hmm, well spent almost $1,000 on getting Black Beauty all checked out. No issues, just normal yearly expenditures to meet the standards for her sticker. I'm glad someone is saving though! haha. We don't mind too much, she gets us down south every winter.

  5. I'm glad it was a lovely and smoke free day for you, Jackie. I've been working extra hard this month to keep expenses under control, use what we have here rather than buying added groceries. It just seems like everything is $1 or more higher each time I go to the grocery store, sigh.

  6. I'm nowhere near as frugal as you, but I certainly believe in combining errands and shopping when out in the car. It just makes sense, doesn't it, to do as many jobs as you can when you are out. And living here in New Zealand, our washing is usually hung on the outside clothesline to dry. Our winter weather has been unusually mild, calm and sunny. I have a small wall mounted clothesline in the garage to use on wet days.. Coffee with a friend is always nice.

  7. I was definitely not frugal this week because I succumbed and ordered fabric and yarn to make a fusion quilt. I made our daughters-in-love each one for Christmas a few years ago and have always wanted one for ourselves. We're planning to repaint our living room, hallway and kitchen once the weather cools down and I think we're going with a soft sage colour so using red plaid covers we currently have on our couch will make it look Christmas-y. So...a new quilt reflecting the new wall colour...and a lack of frugality!
