Tuesday Tidbits

The yard work is finally done. Well as done as it can be right now. Still I keep thinking I am missing something, just can not for the life of me figure out what.

I will have to add some soil to a few of the baskets, and pots as the soil seems to have settled, and not in a good way. That will be done tomorrow. Pics of what the deck and yard look like now so we can have a comparison with later in the summer tomorrow. The nights are still a bit too cool to put the lemon trees out, but things are looking up after tonight. Hopefully very soon those two will be out as well.

I am trying to think of a new frugal habit to try for next month. Foraging more is out until closer to the middle to end of the summer, I do have one idea but I need to pass it by Harvey first as it involves me using reusable cloths as paper towels. Not sure how he would feel about that and I do have some regular paper towels to get through first. Also, I will be learning how to weave, so I am not sure if I would have the time to make said reusable paper towels and would that in fact save us money or cost more with the water needed to wash them? I also have a package of paper napkins to use up (they last us a very long time) so not sure making reusable napkins would be the way to go right now. I will need to think on this a bit longer.

Our water was turned off this morning (was supposed to happen yesterday) and I managed to fill lots of containers. I will not empty them as we would have to boil our water before drinking or cooking with now. Also we paid for this water so we will use up all that we can.

I will probably finish the knitted tank by the end of the week. I am really working on getting my various stashes down to manageable levels. Or at least where I will not feel guilty purchasing something to add to them.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Tuesday Tidbits

It has been a rainy couple of days, which means no work in the gardens and my plants are all inside. Harvey went out to check the rain gauge a few minutes ago and since about 9 last night we have gotten 1 1/2 inches of rain, and the rain is still coming down. Fact is this corner of the province will not be getting as much rain as the western corner. Still, every bit helps and our rain barrel is full for watering when the sun comes back out.

I finished the hour glass blocks and have figured out if the fabric is a bit to heavy, well things do not line up as nicely. Learning episode here and since the finished product will be used outside perfection is not needed.

I have pulled the fabric to cut one purse/bag out and will do that tomorrow while my friend is here. Once that is done I will knit on my second tank top. It is so nice that S wanted to get together again.

I am thinking of joining the choir that she leads as part of my trying to get out of the crisis of faith I am undergoing at this time. I have always loved singing (even though I am not that good at it) and have sung with this choir and when we have put on church musicals in the past.

I did not do as well as I had hoped on the saving water last month so that will continue this month, and I am adding cook with appliances more. Hopefully at least one will catch and I think I might actually get two new frugal habits to stick.

I need to get supper started (there will be enough for a second meal) and then I can visit your blogs while things are cooking in the toaster oven.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

Oh my it is Friday already and I really haven't been paying attention to my frugal habits.

Of course I have followed my usual habits of opening the windows in the evening to cool off the house at night. I have also used rain water every second day to water my bits and bobs. Meals planned and followed to use up all that I can.

I have combined errands, shopped sales, did our own landscaping (more will be done next year).

I have been decluttering which breaks me at times, but needs to be done.

Lately I have been considering ways to add to our overall financial picture, and wondering if I could sell items I make...I did try this before without success, but perhaps with better advertising I could do so. It isn't that we really need the extra cash, more I would like to use up what we have and add just a bit to the family coffers.

Off to visit with all of you, and decide a few more things that are stirring in this old brain.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday

Wow, it is the end of the work week for those that work, and it is the end of my planting and pretty much the end of Harvey's getting in the veggie garden (though he was looking for kohlrabi starts when we bought the last of the dirt yesterday, and what I hope are the last of my plants (well maybe a citronella or lavender yet).

I finished all my planting over the course of three days. My back just does not take all the bending over that is necessary any longer. Age is creeping up on me. Still I am happy with what I got completed and just in time for a lovely gentle rain. Which we were not supposed to get until tomorrow. This will replenish what we have used out of the water barrel working on the gardens over the past week.

1.  Pruned one of the two lemon trees and placed the trimmings in some water to see if they root. Perhaps a couple more trees coming up.

2.  Been making good use of leftovers either as lunches or as other meals at supper time.

3.  I have been able to keep the lights off most of the day and let the natural light into the living room and dining room. Today, drats I need the lights on.

4.  Reading free books that I downloaded on my ereader for entertainment when I first get into bed.

5.  Working on those monthly projects to use some of my stashes up. So far it seems to be working well.

6.  Harvey has been working in his space in the basement repairing a few items and making a few as well.

7.  Windows have been opened to keep the house cool. Holding off on using the air conditioner as long as possible.

In Canada we get a FIT test mailed to us every two years. This is a sort of pre-test for colon or rectal cancer. My test came back normal today. Fist pump happening.

Menus have been changed a bit over this week, just so I can use things up that need using. I can always move those meals to the next week.

I think I might finally have gotten Harvey on the frugal path. He is often the one that says lets use this up before it goes bad, we don't want to waste anything. Still there is a bit of waste, but not like in the days before I realized how much of our money we were wasting.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.
