 Thrifty and Frugal

Another week of being frugal and thrifty happened here on the old homestead. 

I have noticed that quite often my posts do not show up as changing on peoples feeds. I am not sure what hocus pocus is occurring on Blogger, but I do hope the fix the problem soon. I just always click on all blogs on my sidebar just in case there has been a post that didn't show up. Believe me there are lots.

1.  Hung all clothing on the lines outside this week, except for towels, and sheets.

2.  Windows open to cool the house two days this week.

3.  Using up leftovers in the fridge and fridge freezer to make meals.

4.  Patched a pair of Harvey's pants.

5.  No watering necessary outside as we have had some rain over the last three days.

6.  Used some of my saved allowances to purchase some new sandals, three bras, a skort, 2 pairs of pants and a very nice dress. All on sale and the total cost was under $80.00. Oops forgot 2 short sleeved tops as well.

7.  Picking lettuce from the garden.

8.  Harvesting and processing rhubarb (might get another pick as of right now).

9.  Put $0.45 in the change jars.

10.  Went grocery shopping and picked up lots of on sale produce, and some dairy which will keep me from going for a big shop next week.

11.  Spring cleaning and walking for exercise, using up some more purchased cleaners.

So not to bad a week. How did you all do this week?

Tuesday Tidbits and Stuff

 After promising myself I would stay home, I decided to go out for a quick cup of coffee. I don't know why I keep doing it to myself, but I went out for coffee to my friend's place. The one who likes to argue with me, and of course after being less argumentative has gone back to her usual angry self. I think I could say one thing and she would automatically say I was wrong even if she knew I was right. I think it is much better for my mental health right now if I just stay away for longer periods of time, that actually seems to help.

It stayed pretty cool today and the wind was fairly strong and has picked up as the day has progressed. Supposed to be even cooler tomorrow. We got a bit lazy today and decided to wait another day before heading out and doing the last of the leaves and putting away a few more pots and such. 

Worked on my projects today, and the sewing machine decided it was going to act up a bit. I could have gotten a bit more completed if I hadn't had to clean the throat plate out as often as I had to. Perhaps the machine needs a bit of a rest???? If that is the case I will perhaps cut out Harvey's pajama pants tomorrow and work more on the embroidery. Right now I am leaning more towards needing 9 embroidered blocks. Just to make the quilts wide enough to at least lay at the end of a bed. The rubber backing needs to be sewn on Kris's woven rug so I could get that done as well. Thus giving my machine a bit of a rest and me getting rid of some frustration over the cleaning of the throat plate. 

Could also make a few more spice mixes for the gift baskets, and figure out what to do with some rather tough kale. It is a bit hard to eat it in a salad, but today the last of that shall be eaten. 

Simplicity wise, my hall is nice and clean. Much easier to keep clean now as well. Next up is to work on what is under my desk. The top is pretty good as I did go through lots of the papers and removed or filed them away. The drawers could use another tidy as well.

Off to get supper started as Harvey needs to watch the ball game tonight. Hopefully the Blue Jays win this one, though after 18 innings last night both teams could be plenty tired. Hope to get some of you visited as well.

Tuesday Tidbits and Stuff

 

Well, I suppose it is time to show all of you some photos of what projects I have managed to get done so far this month. I did not manage to get a picture of the 60 pairs of mitts that I managed to finish over the last few months before they left the house.

I made more muffins to eat for breakfasts or for Harvey to have as a snack with ice cream.

I managed to get 6 containers of tomato sauce ready and in the freezer. Some of these will be used to make meaty spaghetti sauce at a point next month.

I finished the quilt, even the hand quilting. Glad the boys were home to hold it up for a picture. It actually turned out much larger than I thought it would. I do hope the recipient likes it.

I did not get a picture of all the scrap fabric cut into various sized squares. I did get this picture of some of my new tinkle cloths before I edged them.

I made two sets of placemats out of this material for our sons Christmas baskets.

Mended an outdoor cushion and our daughter's Cabbage Patch doll. Now the doll can be washed and dressed once again.

Made a set of placemats for us (have more fabric to make some more after Christmas), and I used up some fabric from the making of the quilt to make a pillow. 

Cut up some Christmas fabric and a piece that was really too small to even make a top from and now I have lots of cloth napkins to sew. 

Still have lots of time this month, so I am sure I will be able to show you a few more finished projects for this month.

Tuesday Tidbits

 

Woke up to a fiery red sky this morning. Absolutely beautiful, but that old saying kept running through my head. Red sky at night, sailor's delight, red sky at morning, sailor's take warning. Mind you we are not on the sea right now so other than some rain earlier there was nothing to worry about.

Headed out to the new pharmacy in town and got our Covid boosters this morning. So far no real pain in the arm at all just a tiny bit when I move it a certain way. Harvey says his really doesn't hurt much either. 

We are supposed to have nice weather for the rest of this week, so the two of us will be working in the yard. Branches need to be cut down, leaves racked, eavestrough cleared out. Still have plants to dump, and furniture to cover. Harvey wanted a day off with no work, so we took today off just in case the shots caused major problems. 

Yes, after 5 days of careful sewing I have finished the dress!! I need to give it a good pressing and then I can take a picture. Hoping to have the sets of Christmas ornaments done as well by Friday. This would mean I am actually doing very well on this months projects with perhaps no carry over into next month. What a joy, as Christmas baking will be starting and a few other projects will be started (and hopefully finished). I will also be making the second dress next month as well. Hopefully this one is a bit simpler.

Discovered a fairly bad leak on the toilet yesterday so Harvey started fixing it. He tried one thing, which didn't work and so this morning on the way back from our boosters, a Canadian Tire stop was made. He picked up the only other piece that could be causing the problem and that seems to be working. We don't need to pay for water being wasted. 

Still thinking about trying the shopping every three weeks. It could be done and I could still get points for scanning if I do other things on the third week... Like get gas, pick up prescriptions, that kind of thing. Or perhaps have our monthly brunch on the week I am not purchasing anything???? I haven't purchased fuel for the car since the 14th of September and we still have at least half a tank. I could probably go for another two or even three weeks at least. 

I am trying to stay away from the news as it hurts my soul so much. How can people be so cruel to each other? I just can't any longer.
