Thrifty Tuesday

Before I start my post for tonight I want to tell you all that we were under a tornado watch for a little while before supper. Everything is good, and the hail was not bad, just a few small bits for a short period of time. 

I am going to try and upload a picture/video. Hope it works.

So what thriftiness was practiced on the old homestead this week?

I have been watching free television on my android box again. 

Eating fresh beans, and cucumbers from the garden.

Used up lots of little balls and orphan skeins of yarn knitting those 13 pairs of mitts for Kurt to take to school.

Started to use up more yarn from my stash knitting Harvey's Christmas sweater.

Collected another old sheet to use as backing for any quilt I decide to make (I have quite a collection of these now).

Mended a small hole in a pillow case.

Saved the elastics and twist ties from various bags from my shopping late last week.

Small Steps

Today after shopping I spent some time cleaning sewing machines and storage containers. Everything is nicely dusted now.....

I also took that scrap material off the top of the storage containers and started cutting that material into quilting squares.

I still have many more to do, but things are gradually looking much better. At least I have room to work which is a very good thing.

I also pulled out the Caramel Slice.

I am going to slice this up tonight and put it into containers.

I feel a bit down as I talked to Kris tonight and he will not be coming home until Monday. I can understand as he wants to clean up his apartment a bit before he comes home for two weeks, but I was so looking forward to both boys being home at the same time.

Sunday Ramblings

Today the Church celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday.

Father Brian told us that this is not about empty devotions, rather it is about the mercy Christ imparted with His Divinity. That we should be more open to acts of mercy, love and compassion to those less fortunate than we are.

Father went on to mention that Pope Francis has announced a year of mercy to begin in the fall of this year.

We must show mercy, and do charitable acts with no thought as to what we can gain from them, not for our glory but rather for the glory of God and his Son. Considering some of the political jockeying going on in our Parish right now this could be an eye opener for some people. I will continue to do what I am able to do and hopefully things will settle down very soon.

Today I was very grateful for the sunny, breezy day. I have actually managed to use my outside clothes line twice now. It was wonderful seeing the sheets fluttering in the wind.

Nothing reminds me so much of the beginning of spring than the smell of line dried items.

I also recycled three more used candle jars.

I still have to use some Goo-B-Gone to get rid of the sticky residue from the labels, but then these will be ready to use in my sewing room to store thread and perhaps some buttons.

Tuesday Thriftiness

I have been buying ice cream in smaller containers lately, after all Harvey and I only eat a bit for desserts now and then. After we are done I have been washing the containers out.

They are made entirely of plastic and the lid fits nice and tight. Perfect for storing those leftovers in. I usually use a piece of masking tape and write what the container holds on it, placing the tape on the lid. These also stack very nicely in the freezer taking up much less room than some of my other recycled plastics. I am also not spending money on containers that have the lids break while residing in the freezer!!! I have discovered a few over the years that are destroyed after a few uses.

Still working on clearing out things we no longer use. Wow, how did I collect so much!! I have another 22 items to take to the Salvation Army thrift store. I go at hours the store is closed so I am not tempted to go in and do any shopping. I will post pictures before I take the next group to donate.

It's All Downhill From Here

Once again it is the middle of the week. I actually have not accomplished all that I wanted, but at least the house is clean and I have decluttered more t-shirts and clothing. This week is a bit busier than most lately in that I have worked or will work 2 evenings and 3 days. Kind of cuts down on time around the house.

This month will be a reduce, reuse and recycle month on the Phillips Homestead.

I have already removed two bags of clothing from the premises and I hope to take some cans and bottles in tomorrow as well.

This is the third bag of clothing that I removed from our closets (okay mostly mine) and once I get a fourth bag filled off I will take them to the Salvation Army. I am beginning to enjoy the rooting through clothing to see what still fits, what I can perhaps remake into something else, and what needs to be out of the house and perhaps be replaced later down the road.

I was wondering if any of you knew what use this could be put to.

We were given a lovely wine rack as a gift for Christmas and as this one is still in excellent shape, we have been racking our brains to come up with a use for it. Any ideas???

New Idea for A Project

While cleaning out my drawers a couple of days ago I got the bright idea for a new project (save me from bright ideas for new projects, especially when have a white board full of unfinished projects).

I took a bunch of the t-shirts that I was going to give to the church rummage sale and cut them up. I got quite a bit of material from them as you can see. Soon I will be cutting the pieces up into 1 x 5 inch strips. I will use these strips of material on this.

I got this rug hooking mesh on sale a few years ago thinking I would take up rug hooking. Hmmm, not going to happen anytime soon, however weaving strips of old t-shirts through the mesh is doable.

I am going to need many more t's in order to get this done so it will be an on going project over the next year. I am thinking blues, creams, blacks and pinks would be a good colour combination.

Here is hoping that I can get started on this project very soon.
