My first grocery shop of the new year and I came home with this. I have started my goal of buying store brand products. This week it was eggs, rice, frozen veggies, butter, and chubs of sandwich meat.
I am hoping we like the taste of these and keep buying them adding each week to the list. While this week the savings weren't great I did manage to save $6.79 over and above the sales prices by buying these products. Some of these were on sale as well. I did notice the prices while lower than the brand name versions, are not as low as could be expected. Penny here and a penny there all adds up.
There are a few items we buy that I will not even try the store brand. I have tried the store brand toilet rolls and was not at all happy. The same with yogurt and bread flour. Still when those items go on sale they are actually cheaper so I will stock up at that time.

We're here in the states but I am guessing most grocery stores are pretty much the same when it comes to how they price stuff. You have to be a wee bit careful and watch the prices. Many times I've found the name brand to be less expensive than the store brand because it was on sale. If you have Aldi's in your area, a lot of people love them and their prices are quite good. We just don't seem to find too much there that we use. And, for TP and hand towels, the big packs from Costco and Sam's are the best prices we've found. We get them when they have them on. Sale. Both have TP on sale this month. It is a constant up hill battle at the grocery!
ReplyDeleteI see some Co-op products. I would endorse them for the most part. I don't bake bread but use the flour for all other baking. I also enjoy the frozen vegetables over other brands. It's always important to know the prices. I've found prices at the local Co-op to be less expensive than at Costco.
ReplyDeleteAny saving is good and every penny does add up, I am open to try anything, but agree some things I won't compromise on,for example tea bags. x
ReplyDeleteYou made some good savings Jackie. I hope you end up liking the store brands, so you can continue to buy them in future. I was shocked yesterday to find my cholesterol lowering yoghurts had gone up by 10% since before Christmas. I will still probably buy them, but then the manufacturers know this and that's exactly how they get away with it, as there are no competitors selling similar products at the moment.

ReplyDeleteCan you get Compliments brand Jackie? I like their frozen vegetables. I find Lucerne products sold at Safeway to be excellent - butter, milk and especially the blueberry cheesecake ice cream! I don't mind PC brand toilet paper - sometimes get it for free by spending $150 at Superstore. Walmart's Great Value and Finest Excellence brands are pretty good too. I have no hesitation using Life brand vitamins from Shopper's either.
ReplyDeleteJanet, we have a Sobey's and a No Frills other than our Federated Co op. I haven't tried the Compliments brand or Lucerne brands as of yet. Both those stores are on the opposite side of the city from me (though only a 5 or so minute drive). Next grocery shop I am going to check them out.
