Thrifty and Frugal Thursday

Thrifty and Frugal

It has been a week of strangely satisfying savings after the surprise tax payment. Still things will be worked on even more to make back the cash spent on the new dining room chairs, the new range, and the nasty tax bill. Pretty sure collecting the money back on those items is going to take until the end of the year. I am just hoping that there are no other surprise costs around the corner.

1.  Using up items in the fridge and freezer.

2.  Only purchasing items like groceries on sale.

3.  Went to one dollar store for the first time in probably two years and picked up the spice jars, SOS pads and looked at the baskets for Kurt's and Kris's Christmas gifts. Man those baskets are way less expensive. I can probably get two of them for way less cost than purchasing them at Walmart.

4.  Using up more of the 4" squares and 2 1/2" strips making quilt tops.

5.  The weather has been nice enough for me to get out walking most days. Boy am I out of shape.

6.  Watching videos of new methods of storing food.

7.  Finding yarn to knit myself a few summer tanks.

8.  Hanging clothes up on the lines downstairs.

9.  Made a few more tinkle cloths so that hopefully I can extend the amount of time before having to wash them.

10.  I am reading a book on my Kobo ereader called 925 Ways to Save. So far the first two chapters relate more to teaching your children how to save. Hopefully that will change.

Harvey has been doing some work outside, but since it is still pretty cold or at least pretty cool he is taking his time getting things done.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. Sounds like a good week, Jackie. I hope there are no other surprise costs either. The book sounds interesting, I’ll see if I can find it to read here.

  2. We had an unexpected surprise that we have to think and pray about - our van is having electrical issues and doesn’t hold a charge. Of course that’s what we think. It could be something less expensive. Ugh, it’s always something!

  3. I feel you on that out of shape thing. Our winter was so severe, I didn't get out much. Now I need to work up my endurance again. I am looking forward to learning more of your new/alternative storage solutions!

  4. Seems spring brings on the aches and pains, as we were sedentary much of the winter! Getting out and moving, takes time to get used to.
Sounds like a good week. Have a lovely weekend.

  5. You're keeping busy, as always. We're doing better with left overs. Love you to take pictures of your quilt tops for us to see your projects. Appreciate your visit and comments about this uncomfortable times with this horrible administration. ((HUGS)) we must keep our sanctity.

  7. Seems you’re making the most of every penny and staying grounded through it all. Love the mix of practicality and creativity—especially using up the fabric and making summer tanks. Inspiring. www.melodyjacob.com

  8. We need baskets for storage too, and when I checked prices at a couple of places, I decided I'll be using dollar store ones instead. It's amazing the difference in price.
Just a suggestion, the tax info for 2025 should have been released in January (rates/credits, etc.) Your financial advisor should be able to do a mock-up based on what you know/estimate will be the income for the year. That should give you an estimate of your tax bill (if any) for next year.

  9. Will have to see if our library has that book available, thank you.
Found a use for used teabags in my art so that made me happy this week.

  11. Happy Easter to you and hubby. It's a quiet at home one for me this year, as we would have been on a caravan trip. No more of those sadly now that Robin has gone. There's been bad weather here, and I'm safely tucked up at home with Easter Buns and an Easter Egg to indulge in.

  12. I am doing # 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8. Aren't dollar stores great spots to have a good poke about. I've discovered one carries chips that are quite good...much cheaper than regular store bought. I wish they would carry more sewing stuff. Happy Easter to the three of you!
