Thrifty Tuesday

Another week closer to Christmas, and it is getting harder to remember to be a thrifty and economical woman. It seems that the closer I get to a holiday the more I panic about getting things done and to heck with the cost. This year I am trying much harder to be the thrifty person that I am the rest of the year.

I am still working on using up all that I can. The freezer is low on bits and bobs, I was really quite organized over the last few weeks and managed many meals out of those frozen bags of meat and bits of leftovers. You could almost say I got many an almost free meal from what was in there.

I also have been good at not purchasing more craft items. Still have lots of those types of items to use up.

Mending has taken up some of my time. I have fixed hems, sewn on loose buttons and darned socks/gloves.

I even managed to sew a few items of clothing to replenish some short falls in my wardrobe. After I finish my Christmas apron (hopefully tomorrow) I will be able to get back to hand quilting my scrap quilt. The other quilt top will be machine quilted and hopefully both will be finished before Christmas. They will be lovely to wrap up in Christmas morning.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. We're so frugal throughout the year that Christmas time is the one season of the year where I don't worry about frugality... at least too much anyway. And there's lots of really good sales on craft items & kits around Christmas too... so I order enough to last me throughout the coming new year. I have 5 new Diamond Art Club canvas kits I bought with their most recent 25% off coupon code... which is non-existent during the rest of the year. So now I'm all set. :-) ~Andrea xoxo

  2. Its easy to get caught up with the season and spend more than anticipated. You are doing so well using up the oddments from the freezer.

  3. It is so much harder to remain thrifty in the run up to Christmas isn't it. You are doing so well using up bits and bobs to stretch your meals, I am doing the same right now.
This afternoon we will hear an announcement from the government regarding tier structures and Christmas. I really hope that we remain in tier 3 (high) until relaxation of the rules for Christmas in order to keep reducing transmission of the virus. Personally, I think a 5 day relaxation period seems too long. We will be happy for 2 days ie 25th and 26th Dec. I am so happy for you to hear that your sons can come home for Christmas :)
    Stay safe x

  4. I'm sure even with what you say is 'not as thrifty over the season' you are 85% more thrifty than most of us! You do great, Jackie!

  5. It is hard to be thrifty this year, groceries cost so much more yet we want our family to be full of yummy things so go overboard on treats and special items. I managed to get our small turkey free with points 2 months ago thankfully so that has put the cost down (and since we are eating it Thursday I am currently defrosting it and now we have more freezer space!) If ever there was a time to be non thrifty I think this is it

  7. I agree that it is hard to be thrifty at Christmas time. It's only the 17th and I'm already nearly to my budget on groceries. But the freezer has lots of food in it and I'll only need fresh veg, milk and some bread to see me through the rest of the month.

Glad to hear you'll be able to have both your boys home for Christmas. Take care and stay well!
