The Darkness of Elections

Last night a young man came to our door collecting signatures for a Liberal Candidate in our riding. Up until then I thought that we were going to be short one candidate on our ballots.

This young man stood at our door in a very differential manner. In fact he seemed to be scared to mention which candidate he was collecting signatures for to get on the ballot. When I asked him which party he mumbled Liberal. I said "Give me your clip board." He slowly handed it to me and I filled it in, then I called Harvey to come and do the same.

I spoke to him for a bit after, trying to figure out where he could get more signatures as it seems in our rather huge riding very few would sign. In fact he had been yelled at, had doors slammed in his face, told where to go and how to get there fast, and even spit on. This is not the way I want politics to happen in my country. This is not how I was brought up to behave.

Yes, where I live is very "blue" (Conservative), but we need to respect each other. We need to treat all the way we wish to be treated. In a real democracy one would think people would want a full slate of candidates. If we don't have a full slate we will be causing people to perhaps ruin their ballot, or not even bother to vote.

I so hope that they managed to get enough signatures, and I do hope that the young man realizes that not everyone disrespects what he feels is important enough to knock on strangers doors.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. Sadly, politics seems to be bringing the worst out in people. The Brexit debacle is certainly a contentious issue.

  2. Politics really is descending into something very unpleasant isn't it. I can't even begin to discuss the complete and utter mess we have created in the UK. Absolutely outrageous words from our politicians which is reflected in wider society.

I've heard comments over the last few months that people wouldn't have considered saying out loud previously. I hope the next wave of politicians can start to bring out the best in us all.

  3. That kind of abuse for canvassers is terrible. I get more and more abuse at the CS these days, which is quite worrying. People are becoming more aggressive and demanding in general. In the UK, our parliament has descended into chaos and this is not a good example to set the public. There is so much focus on Brexit that other important issues are being neglected leading to people trying to fend for themselves in any way they can. It's not a nice time to live in the UK. I'm surprised to hear that

  4. Thank you for visiting my blog.. like your country sometimes politics seem to bring out the worst in people. I often wonder why some politicians entered into parliament because from the way they behave they don't seem to have the peoples' interests at heart. Lovely blog I read back quite a bit.

  5. We have also had a few people coming to our door and no matter which party they belong to, I give them time to speak their piece and explain why they are there. I may not be voting for them or agree with them but it costs me nothing to be polite and know they are just trying to do a job.
