Thrifty Thursday

It is Thursday once again, time to list those thrifty accomplishments for the week.

1.  I am once again cooking using appliances, mostly because my oven is not working correctly and since I have enough cooking things I told Harvey not to worry about it until after Christmas. As long as the stove top works I am fine.

2.  Harvey ordered some pins for the snow blower online and they came in just a few days. He can now fix this himself instead of hauling it to someone else and spending cash that is easily saved.

3.  Our province is closing all Crown owned liquor stores and so the one here is trying to get rid of as much product as is possible. Harvey picked up a few items for less than half price. I think we might go (or I might go) tomorrow and pick up a few other items that are on sale. Love me some Bailey's in hot chocolate over the holiday. While the sale is great, the people that will be out of work is not so great. Add in the fact that profits from these stores go to the province, we will probably be looking at paying more in the way of provincial income tax.

4.  Fixed a seam in a pair of Harvey's pj bottoms.

5.  Fixed the frayed top of an otherwise in good shape pillow case.

6.  Downloaded some free reading material onto my Kobo.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

  1. I'm wondering now if the Ontario Liquor Control Board will be following suit. Won't matter to us either way, but like you say, it's sad that people are out of work because of it.
I remembered something frugal last week and Resident Chef promptly made it - whipped butter goes a LOT further than regular butter and it's very easy to do.

  2. It's so fortunate you have the other cooking appliances. Must be so frustrating to be without your oven though, this close to Christmas!

  3. According to the finance minister, the Liquor Board stores weren't making much money - likely because they allowed private stores to operate in the last five years or so. Of course she didn't mention the part about the unionized workers losing their jobs and the private stores pay minimum wage to their employees. The cynic in me wonders how many private stores the current government members, family and friends, have investments in.
I wonder what will happen with the stores. There's a big building here in east Regina, near the now empty Costco store. With businesses closing, I doubt there is a big retailer that will need that much space and the Sobey's liquor store in the mall parking lot is pretty new.
Darn, I was hoping your oven would limp it's way through Christmas for you.

  4. Sorry to hear about the oven. How frustrating. When we lived in Washington state, they transitioned from state run liquor stores, to allowing alcohol to be sold in grocery stores. I'm not sure how it impacted employment, but the cost overall dropped quite substantially.

We are trying to do the same small things: menu planning, eating from the freezer, eating leftovers, etc.

  5. Pity about the liquor store and those losing their jobs. Good frugal habits as always Jackie.

  6. Here in Alabama the state controls all the liquor. Private stores can sell it but they have to buy it from the state store which increases the price. And an FYI, roasted marshmallows dipped in Baileys are AWESOME!!!
