Sunday Ramblings

It has been a quiet First Sunday in Advent. I have spent much of the day after Mass thinking about what went on at our monthly Parish Council meeting and wondering if I made a mistake entering church politics once again. I don't like the fact that Father decided that my first meeting back would be where he took everyone to task. This is something that I was happy not to be facing any more and was hoping that all would be running smoothly. Guess that was a false hope on my part. I will see what the next meeting brings.... I may be handing in my resignation if things have not improved.

While thinking and pondering what my thoughts and feelings were I spent time knitting. I have managed to get the band knitted and sewn onto the sweater. I hope to get the sweater sewn up and the buttons on tomorrow, but I am not sure that will happen.

Yesterday, on our big stock up shop we bought lots of deli style sandwich meat and bacon which will need to be packaged up for the freezer. So along with all my normal household chores I will be in charge of vacuum sealing all the meat. Should be a very busy day.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Friday Frugalities

Ahhh, that time of the week when I list some (not all because I have listed them before) of my frugal hits this week.

I have been using up the frozen packages of cooked meat from the fridge freezer to great effect. I almost have one basket in the freezer empty!!! The meals have gone over with Harvey very well and any extra has gone into the fridge (meat wise, cause sometimes I put extra into the bag) to be used for sandwiches at lunch.

I spent sometime cleaning and decluttering the sewing/craft room. I found lots of black 2" strips which means that when I made Kris's purple/black/silver quilt I really did not need to cut more black strips. Now that I know what I have there should be no waste.

Went for my frugal exercise every day this week even though my knee was touchy and the weather had gotten quite chilly.

I am sitting at 20 no spend days for the month, which while not quite at my target yet I am getting pretty darn close.

I will manage to put $40.00 in my savings envelope this month, which is a good thing. I use this to buy gifts for Harvey and sometimes supplies for sewing or knitting.

I found 35 cents on my walks this week and that money went directly into the change jar.

Harvey is remembering to turn down the heat in our bedroom after making the bed most days. A really great thing as he used to forget all the time.

Best yet gas has fallen well below the $1.00 a liter here and I am loving the fact that it will cost even less to fill the vehicles.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Slowly But Surely

Thanks everyone for your wishes for my knee to get better soon. While it is not as painful as yesterday, it still sends shots of pain up my leg when I move it wrong. Did not get much sleep last night either so I will be hitting the bed fairly early today.

To all my American readers Happy Thanksgiving. We all have much to be thankful for.

Since my knee was still causing problems I decided that household chores would be done slowly. Thank heavens today was an easy chore list, however I did not think my knee would take kneeling on the kitchen floor to scrub out the oven. That delightful task was left till early next week.

Instead I decided to tackle a couple of easier tasks that needed to be done.

First off I tackled the closet pantry shelf. Half empty boxes were emptied and the contents placed nicely on the shelf. The boxes themselves were placed in my recycling basket.

Then on to my on going project, the decluttering of the sewing/craft room.

This is one of two boxes of 2" strips that I rolled up and placed neatly into their containers. I can now see what I have to make strip quilts or use for binding. I still have a couple of boxes of strips thrown willy nilly into them that I will be going through and rolling. Much better organized now, and I am hoping to be able to remove a few containers from the room, or repurpose them to hold something else.

Tomorrow I plan on working on some baskets of yarn. I think I will be donating a few partial skeins and balls just so they are out of my house. I am fairly sure some crafty person will be able to use them. I also hope to be able to cut out a few patterns, but we will see how quickly I can get my chores done in the morning.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

I Hurt!!

I don't know what I did in my sleep last night, but this morning (say middle of the night) I woke up with extreme pain in my right knee.

I have spent most of the day with my knee wrapped in a tensor bandage and elevated when possible. Still if I move it the wrong way I get sharp pains..... Not enjoying this at all. I am hoping that by having a nice hot bath things improve. That is if I can get in and out of the tub. If not I guess I will need to take a shower (Boo).

This caused me not to get any extra cleaning or work done today. Oh well I am sure that I can manage a bit more tomorrow. At least I hope so.

I woke up to things being covered with a fresh white coat.

The snow has been coming down for most of the day and is supposed to continue tomorrow morning. As the song goes, "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas." I am slowly getting my Christmas spirit.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

I have been using up items in the fridge freezer, making them into tasty meals. Saved lots of cash by using them up.

I have also been making Christmas gifts using fabric and yarn from my stashes... Harvey figures I have enough of both to open my own shop!! And I kind of do seem to collect on sale fabric and yarn. One never knows when it will come in handy. Like right now getting gifts ready for Christmas at a fraction of the price of buying gifts.

Like these three simple slouch hats (or beanies) I made for my nieces. This project used up four small balls of fluffy pink yarn that I could not figure out what to do with. The hats along with 3 pairs of mitts each make up their Christmas gifts this year. The mitts were made with yarn left from other projects. Total cost was $5.00 each gift compared to $15.00 each.

Kept me out of trouble working on them as well.

Got one of my hats back at church. So I am off to Parish Council tonight. I guess I need to learn how to say no to a priest.............

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

Today was fairly warm as far as a winter's day in Saskatchewan can be. I went for a walk after Mass to think about how today's homily perhaps changed my way of thinking.

I always thought that Christ ruled from the right hand of God in heaven. Not necessarily in a castle, but in a house with many rooms. You, know rooms for us all.

Today Father Brian said that thinking like that was not the way Christ ruled. Instead He ruled from the cross.

I think it may take awhile to understand what that means and how it will affect the way I understand my faith.

Still working on making the computer work properly and not getting anywhere fast. I really do believe that we will end up taking it to the computer gurus to work on. Much to Harvey's dismay as he thinks we should be able to fix it in no time at all.

Everybody have a wonderful night.

God bless.

Saturday Roundup

The weather is getting colder and this morning brought a skiff (as Harvey would call it) of snow on the ground. Since there was no wind I went for my morning walk and really enjoyed it after a day of blustery winds when there was no way I could walk and stay warm.

My computer is acting up and I think we may have to take it to the computer doctor next week. I can't upload pictures from our cameras and that is pretty bad considering Christmas is around the corner! I have been taking them with my tablet and then emailing them to myself. Seems to be working, but it is a great deal of extra steps and slightly time consuming. Even so I am glad that I can still find a bit of a work around.

Harvey spent this week working on a surprise project for what he calls my "woman cave" (I call it my sewing/craft room).

He made a frame for my University diploma. He found it lying on a counter in the basement and figured I worked hard to receive it and should hang it up and show my pride. He even used things he had lying around his work room.

The small plaque beside it was presented to me in 2000. I was working as the Youth Coordinator for our parish and one of the youth decided I needed to be recognized for the "above and beyond" that I went through. One of the television stations here in Saskatchewan had a segment called "Hero of the Week" so she nominated me. I actually won and the station came down and filmed a segment of our Youth Group meeting. I think I am most proud of the fact that I planted seeds which are still growing today.

I have been using up leftovers from the fridge freezer from various packaged up leftovers. Today I made this....

A Turkey pot pie. In making this I used up some pie crust, turkey, and the last of a bag of frozen corn. I added some frozen peas and frozen carrots. Popped it in the oven. And it came out like this.

A lovely and filling supper for the two of us with 2 slices leftover for another meal next week.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Fridays

I have had a great frugal week. Bills are paid until the end of the month and this weeks grocery and paper shop were way down. What a great way to save money and time.

I used $8.00 worth of coupons shopping this week. While this might not seem much to those who are coupon users, this was the best I have ever done.

I brought a bit of cash into our account by subbing at one of the schools.

Used up lots of those pesky leftovers in the fridge freezers making suppers this week as well as used up leftovers in the fridge itself making those suppers.

I have also been using up bits of my yarn stash making those slouchy hats for my nieces for Christmas gifts.

Still turning down the heat in our bedroom during the day. Which should save us cash in the long run.

Drapes and blinds have been opened during the day to let in what sunlight is available, and since we have large expanses of glass facing south this has helped keep our house warm on those sunny days and the furnace is kept from running constantly.

Using up, making do or doing without is making me realize how much we really have.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

It has been a quiet week here on the old homestead.

I am slowly but surely working my way through my goals for this month. Seems as if this is another year where I have left Christmas gift making a bit too late. I am just hoping to finish all I have planned.

The weather has become more of what we are used to at this time of year. Still not much in the way of snow, but the temperatures are dropping and the cold northern winds are blowing in. So glad I did not wait too long to change my clothing out for warmer ones.

I have spent some of my spare time reading blogs and find myself in a quandary. People have much more interesting lives than I do, or are much more in the frugal mindset. At times I feel that I have nothing to share with the blogging world, but I will keep posting away and perhaps the few things I share will make a difference in someone who is just starting on their frugal journey.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Blustery!!!

Today has been cold and blustery. I did manage to get my morning walk in before the weather turned. Good thing as the winds were gusting up to 105 km per hour by mid afternoon. The wind is still howling, and the temperature dropping quickly. It could be a slippery drive to my subbing commitment tomorrow morning.

I curled up with my Christmas knitting after all the household chores and have managed to get quite a bit of the sweater finished. However, I am putting it aside for a bit and working on those hats. Mostly because I need them completed, wrapped and in the mail by the end of next week.

The since my hands were cold (I have actually been cold most of the day) I settled in for a mid afternoon break.

A pot of tea and a warm cup in my hands did wonders for my outlook. I can see many more pots of tea this winter (and I have lots to use up).

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesdays

We spent part of last week pricing out new carpet and furniture steam cleaners since ours had decided to quit. Boy have they gone up in price since we purchased ours.

Harvey decided to try and fix the one we had. With the help of the internet, youtube, and a couple of screws he got it working once again. So for the use of a bit of research and items we had around his work room we no longer have to purchase another. Money saved!!!

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Mid Month Update

So it's mid month and time to update everyone on how well I am managing to meet my monthly goals.

1.   Finish the sweater I am knitting for Harvey for Christmas.  Still working on this, but very close to being done.

2.   Knit 3 hats to add to the gift of mittens for my brother's girls.  I have picked out the yarn, but other than that not even started.

4.   Buy my brothers (Jay and Jerry) their Christmas gifts.  Done.

5.   Work on my embroidery again.  I work on this when I get tired of knitting.

6.   Continue with Project Declutter.  I work on this bit by bit. I already have a couple of bags of items to donate.

7.   Try for 22 no spend days this month. As of right now I am sitting at 12 no spend days. I hope to meet this goal very soon.

8.   Get Christmas cards done and in the mail in a timely fashion.  Christmas cards are mostly finished, I just have to write a letter for one of the cards. Should be able to mail these out this week.

9.   Mail off the gifts for my brothers and my nieces.  If I work really quickly I should be able to finish the hats and get everything out the door by the end of the month. Keep your fingers crossed for me on this one.

So all in all not doing as badly as I feared I was. Buckling down should enable me to get this all done.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Frugal Friday on Saturday

I know this is a day late, but the terrorist attacks in France took precedence yesterday.

My five or more frugal endeavors this week include such things as:

Using coupons for purchases, something I do not do nearly enough.

Walking every morning for at least 10 blocks.

Recycling scrap material into usable squares for quilts.

Working on making Christmas gifts. That sweater for Harvey is taking longer than I thought.

Making a grocery list and sticking to it.

Using up leftovers in my fridge and freezer.

Following my menu plan this month.

Turning down the heat in rooms we are not using. This is because we have electric heat in about 3/4 of the house, and electric heat here in Saskatchewan is very expensive.

Harvey is busy fixing my steam cleaner. He is taking it one step at a time and now he has the suction working wonderfully. Hopefully he will be able to get the cleaning portion working as well.

Everyone have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

Sharing a using up the bits and bobs from the fridge recipe with you all tonight. Cleared a bit out of the pantry as well.

This was our supper two nights ago, before I popped it in the oven. We pretty much demolished it as soon as it was removed from the oven, so no pretty picture of it in all its cheesy goodness.

2 1/2 cups uncooked penne pasta
2 cups cooked diced chicken
1 can of sliced mushrooms
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1/2 can of chicken stock (I used Chicken in a Mug mixed with water in the empty soup can)
1/2 green pepper diced
1/2 onion diced
2 stalks of celery diced
1 cup Parmesan cheese
2 cups Italian shredded cheese (the kind that is made up of 4 types)
1 tsp Worchestershire sauce

I cooked the pasta in salted water until it was slightly underdone. Then everything but 1 cup of the Italian style shredded cheese was mixed together and poured in a baking dish. Topped with the remaining shredded cheese and baked at 350 F for 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

Served with crusty bread, this made a filling meal with leftovers for tonight.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

I spent much of the day getting household chores accomplished, but I did find some time to do a few thrifty chores as well.

There was lots of bits and pieces of fabric that had taken up residence on my sewing/craft room floor. Today I decided to do something with them. Much was cut into quilting squares.

Some was cut into 2" wide strips to be used in the rug I am collecting knit fabric for.

I even managed to cut this old jeans into usable quilting squares!

The floor in my room now looks much better.

This is the small pile of bits and pieces left from cutting the squares out of denim. I went through all my piles picking out usable pieces and packaged them away (I had lots of little piles by the time I was done). The denim was added to a bag of other small pieces of denim, and the cottons were put in their own bag. The teeny, tiny pieces were added to my recycle bin. Harvey did think I was rather silly to keep the scraps, but who knows down the road I may just try my hand at a postage stamp quilt.

I should be able to make a couple of lovely quilts from the material I have saved over the years. Heck I could probably make many scrappy quilts to keep us warm.

Harvey and I have been turning down the heat in rooms we are not using. I really want to give the power company a surprise when the read the meters in January. Wouldn't it be lovely if they owed us money?

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Menu Monday

I did a bit of a change around of the menu for the month. Seems, as I was putting the packaged chicken in the fridge freezer I noticed something unsettling. Bagged and packaged leftovers piling up.

Now we all know that not using something up is not at all frugal, and leaving things to languish in the freezer is part of this category. My menu now takes into account all those bags of yummy food in the freezer and they will be used up post haste.

Monday

Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches (this will use up a container of soup in the freezer).

Tuesday

Some of the Leftover Chicken made into a casserole of some type (bag of frozen chicken out of freezer). I will probably serve some fresh veggies and dip along side (even though the only fresh veggies I have are 1/2 green pepper and some celery).

Wednesday

Leftover Ham from freezer along with some mashed potatoes and peas... This could become scalloped potatoes and be served with peas.

Thursday

Clean out the fridge night. I will make some biscuits to go along with whatever is left in the fridge.

Friday

I work today, but plan on making some lazy perogies. I may get a start on them the night before and just pop them in the oven when I get home.

Saturday

Baked pork chops, rice, and green beans.

Sunday

Pork roast, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots.

So there you have it the weeks dinner menu, this menu will remove a few bags and a container from my freezer. I hope to have the fridge freezer cleared out in no time.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

Sunday Ramblings

This was our gospel this Sunday at Mass. All about giving everything you have in service to God. So many times we hang on to things that we really do not need causing our relationship with Jesus and God to be strained.

Over the past few months, more and more on my Facebook page, people have been posting that we no longer allow God in our schools. I have been lucky in that I work in the Catholic system where prayer and the physical presence of God can be easily found. My children always attended these schools as well.

But what about the Public system?

I truly believe that God is there as well. He is there in the singing of the Canadian national anthem. After all we do sing "God keep our land." He is there in every teacher and all the support staff that work with our children, giving them help when they need it, encouraging them to greater heights. He is there in the anti bully campaigns, in the raising money for the Terry Fox Run, or putting together shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

God is there in the coaches that give up time with their families to help students get better in their chosen sport.

God is there in the parents who work to make schools a better place, by raising funds to buy necessary equipment and to make sure all children have what they need.

Most of all God is within every person that is in the schools. All you have to do is look into the faces that surround you. After all we are made in His image and likeness.

This is what I believe and I hope I have given you a new outlook on where God is.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

Frugal Friday

The end of the first week of November and the beginning of winter. With prices going up we are going to have to watch what we spend and the costs of keeping warm this winter. Especially since our power company does 2 months of estimates before they do a reading of our electrical usage. This month our bill is very high, the company estimated way over what we really used. Hopefully we can keep our usage down and get a bill where they owe us money instead of the other way around.

I have been turning off lights in rooms not in use, turning our heat down in the bedroom, keeping the heat at just below what would be 70, watching what I spend on groceries and Christmas gifts, and what could be our biggest frugal move staying out of stores.

So far this month I have managed 5 days where I have not spent any money what so ever. Hubby did spend today, but it is the first day he has spent money this month. Pretty proud of him as it is usually me trying to stay out of stores and such.

I worked one day this week and brought a bit of cash in. Nice as extra money at this time of year is a very good thing.

Using up all leftovers, I do want a zero waste week badly.

Hubby got the snow blower working without resorting to taking it to someone to fix. He also covered the air conditioner we have built into the wall.

I made a grocery list and for the most part stuck to it. There were some great sales on a couple of items that made it into my basket. I even used a high value coupon and we received another batch of high value coupons that I can use a bit later.

I did my surveys and scanning, receiving another 600 pts. I am almost up to what I need for a Pandora bracelet. Hopefully I will reach that mark by the end of the year.

I only have a couple of extra cleaning jobs to do this month, and hopefully will have a couple (or more of my goals met very soon). Staying home at this time of year seems to keep me on track.

I have finished the back, left side and started the right side of Hubby's Christmas cardigan. I am hoping to get the right side and at least one sleeve done by the end of this week.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thursday Tid Bits

It seems like winter is once again slowly arriving. I woke up to snow this morning which made it just lovely to head out and get my little bit of shopping done. But I did venture out and managed to get everything done. Heck, I even managed to buy gifts for my two brothers. Christmas shopping is now done!!

It is hard to buy for my brothers as they are big men. One considerably big so when and if I can find something other than socks that fit them in the cart it goes. This year I was very lucky. I managed to find Henley shirts for both of them for under my budget. One is getting a greenish colour and the other is getting a smokey blue.

The rest of the day was spent reading blogs I follow, posting on a frugal forum I am part of, doing a few household chores (as usual), reading a few chapters of my book on my ereader, and doing some knitting (which I will go back to as soon as I am finished here). So all rather boring and laid back.

I did get some good grocery deals on some steaks and a pork roast. Love a good deal. My total grocery bill was $95.78 and I saved $12.27. Not as much as I would have liked but since I used my Visa to buy said groceries I will be getting another 2% back at the end of the year and since I am a Co-op member, well come July there will be another 4% back on top of the 2% on the card.

Saving money where I can means a great deal when one is on a fixed income and the holidays are coming up.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Mid Week And Already Tired Out

It is the middle of the week only and I am just exhausted. Part of the reason is more than likely because I worked today and after 4 months it just seemed to drain me right down. Part could be because of the rainy dismal weather we are getting, and part could be the beginning of a fibro flare.

Came home from work and made a freezer meal. Nice and quick and no preparation involved at all.

I also did a bit of knitting and some embroidery work while watching television (I am a Survivor fan) and enjoyed a glass of homemade wine.

While I was gone Harvey fixed our furnace. We got up this morning to a freezing house. It seemed the thermocoupler had burned out. Thank heavens it was an easy fix on our ancient furnace, I just want one more year, and then we will replace it.

Harvey also washed all the inside windows!! Now the problem is the outside, there are a few streaks from when he washed them about a month ago. He is planning to try on the first nice day to redo them.

Tomorrow I head out to the stores for our weekly shop. I am hoping to get some good prices and do a bit of a stock up on a few items.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.

Thrifty Tuesday

I suppose the thriftiest thing I did today was stay out of the stores. Mind you I had a great deal of help. It is rainy and cold, not fit for man or beast outside.

I also got something very unexpected in the mail, a gift card to one of the many eateries in town. It should more than pay for a meal. It seems as if the school I made the Puffed Wheat Cake for decided that since I did not want to be paid for my gift they would circumvent me by giving me a card in the mail. I do thank them from the bottom of my heart.

I am still turning the heat down in the bedroom and turning off lights in rooms not in use. I am hoping that this will help when our electric bill comes. The price of electric is supposed to be rising and we need to get a handle on that while we still can. I am not going to let it get out of control.

I will be taking my lunch with me to my subbing gig tomorrow, leftovers from yesterdays meal. Using up as much as we can saves us money in the long run. A penny here and a penny there does add up over a whole year.

Harvey pulled the snow blower out to get it ready for our first big snowfall. It would not start. In reading the booklet he saw that it was recommended that the spark plug be changed out every second year. Our snow blower is three years old so past time for this to be done. The book recommended it be taken to the dealer, but Harvey did it himself and saved us some more money.

Here is a thrifty tip I have tried and will be using once again this fall.

To bleach grimy grout mix 1 cup bleach in 1/2 gallon water. Scrub with an old toothbrush and let sit for 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Rinse a second time and wipe dry with a cloth. Much less costly than those grout cleaners, and it uses items you already have in your home.

Everybody have a wonderful evening.

God bless.
