Tuesday Tidbits

I think perhaps an explanation of why I have been trying to eat down my fridge freezer.

I have been using this freezer to put leftover roasts, chicken, turkey, ham, the bones from chicken/turkey, leftover gravy, leftover pan drippings, leftover bones from ham or beef.

I found that I was amassing many bags of leftover meats from cooking and that I was not using things up in here in a timely manner. Hence the clean out the fridge freezer, now I can see everything that is in there and when I make up my monthly menu it is much easier to use up those bits and bobs.

I have two freezers down in the basement. A chest freezer which I use to store baked goods, garden produce, soup stock, fruits made into pie filling and fruit just plain frozen. I also put the larger meat items in here like turkey or ham. I also use it for my bulk cooking meals like Eggplant Parma, soups, meat sauce, chili, meatballs and meatloaf, things of that nature.

Then there is the small upright freezer that contains all our meat. I have one shelf for beef, one shelf for chicken, one shelf for pork, and one shelf for various smaller roasts.

The door slots hold sausage, hotdogs, the occasional stuffed chicken products, sandwich meat if I manage to hit a great sale, and sometimes a whole chicken if there is room.

I hope that explains my eating down the fridge freezer, now I have room in there for ice cream, and the baked goods I want to use up for desserts or breakfasts.

Everybody have a wonderful day.

God bless.

  1. I was amazed how much you are prepared for hard times! I only have the freezer area above my fridge and it only has some bread and buns, frozen peas and corn, chicken pieces and fish and half a tub of ice cream. I could probably empty it by the end of the week!

  2. You make me feel better about having two freezers because you use yours so well. However, one must go so I have to reduce and reorganise. :-) xx

  3. You're certainly well prepared for any meal you want to make. I'm down to the fridge freezer and sometimes I realize I'm out of something I needed. Hence eating fish and chips with sweet potato fries last week. :p

  4. I'm a little jealous of all your freezers & organization. I like to prepare freezer food that way too, but we only have the fridge freezer. I'm loving eating down the old freezer food to make space for new ones. Thank you for the inspiration Jackie!

  5. We got rid of our garage freezer a couple of years ago because it was old - about 30 years old and was costing a lot to run the electricity. We did buy a small apartment size refrigerator to put in the garage for fresh produce etc and it has a tiny freezer. I miss not being able to stock up like I used to - we are talking about getting a new freezer possibly later this year. You do so well -

  6. You make such good use of your freezers and I'm sure save a lot of money in the process. It's always good to have something put away in case you don't feel like cooking.

  7. I sometimes miss our chest freezer but sadly there's no room for one in the apartment. We do have a small upright that fits in the corner of our storage room and would be lost without it.

  8. I would love to get a small upright freezer for our laundry room -- just so I could do more bulk cooking. Our fridge freezer stays full with other stuff!

  9. I hope i didn't over step by asking about your 'paring down' in the freezer. You always have good reasons for what you do and I'm always amazed at how organized you are!
Now, even more so. Don't look in my little fridge freezer, mind you, it is big for an rv.
    Thank you!
